Cannondale has signed a three-year partnership with Ironman triathlon World and European Champion Chrissie Wellington. In the coming years to 2011, Wellington will compete on the new Cannondale Slice Hi Mod 1.
“Cannondale offered me the complete package,” Wellington said regarding the multi-year partnership. “A full range of awesome bikes, a commitment to innovation and development, a proven passion for triathlon, years of experience and superb customer service and support. I’m really proud to be part of the Cannondale family, and look forward to making sure that we stay on top of the world!”
Chrissie’s first race on the Cannondale Slice will be Ironman Australia on 5 April 2009. She won the event last year with a time of 9:03:55, beating the course record.
“Chrissie is an amazing athlete and a great fit for our brand,” said Bruno Maier, Executive Vice President for Cannondale Sports Group (CSG). “Not only is she admired within the professional circuit but she is an inspiration to amateurs everywhere.”
Chrissie rose to prominence after winning the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, as a rookie professional. In 2008 she retained her title and set a new Hawaii marathon course record. When Chrissie returns to Kona later this year, she will be joined by 2007 Ford Ironman 70.3 World Champion Mirinda Carfrae and 2008 Ford Ironman third place finisher Sandra Wallenhorst, who will all be racing on the new 2009 Cannondale Slice.
“As soon as I sat on the Slice I knew – we just ‘fit’,” Chrissie said. “I feel comfortable and powerful in the TT position. I’m totally at ease and strong down on the bars. It’s a slightly lower position than I was in before and that’s what it’s all about.”
Wellington’s new partnership with Cannondale follows a strong relationship with her former Cervélo P2C bike. Commenting on her blog, Chrissie added: “Of course, the P2C was a superb bike….and straddling it brought me a huge amount of success. But after winning Hawaii for a second time a number of offers came cycling onto my kitchen table.
“And like every woman shopping for shoes, clothes and a new steed it was important for me to take my time, man handle a few different models, mull things over, wonder if my bum looked big in it, and most importantly make sure the colour matched my lycra wardrobe before making my decision.
“And the Slice – It’s awesome. I love it. Smooth, super comfy, no wobbles or dodgy vibrations, and I reckon it’s going to help me run just that little bit faster too.”
