Despite impressive growth in TriStar events across Europe, and support from elite triathlete Chris McCormack in recent marketing, the TriStar111 Lisboa event has sadly been cancelled.
According to Georg Hochegger, CEO of Star Production SARL, the Monaco-based headquarters for the new TriStar Series, "Too many obstacles in finding agreements with the local organiser led to the decision that the TriStar111 Lisboa should not take place. The event has thus been cancelled. While the local organisers in Lisboa wish to take the step back to the initial format, Star Production concentrates on other destinations like TriStar222 Sardinia taking place in October."
The TriStar111 Lisboa event was originally intended to take place on 24 April 2010. As with other TriStar events, a new distance concept was on offer: 1K swim, 100K bike and 10K run. In addition to TriStar111, Star Production has introduced a TriStar222 double distance format: 2K swim, 200K bike and 20K run. The TriStar 200 format offers varying combinations of the three disciplines.
Ironman 70.3 Austria winner, and 4th placed male at the Ironman World Championships in Kona in 2009, Chris McCormack is quoted in ads placed by Star Production. McCormack noted that “People are looking for challenges that are tough, in places that are unique and different and fun. The new brand Star Events offers another option for athletes.”
Olivier Castelli, Global Event Operation Director of Star Production, gave further background to the decision to pull TriStar111 Lisboa. "Maybe our important inputs to improve the race — an entirely new finish line area for example — will be put into practice for the Lisboa International Triathlon although it will not be run as part of the TriStar series. Of course this means a non TriStar event profits from our experience, and at the same time we are okay to look at it like development aid, if it makes a race better for athletes. Triathlon should be fun, whatever the brand," he said.
Now that TriStar111 Lisboa is cancelled, athletes can either transfer their entry to another race or be refunded the entire entry fee. For transfers to other TriStar races, athletes can contact email@example.com.
