Already recognised as one of the ‘Top Greenest Races’ in the US by Triathlete Magazine, the 7th Annual Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon (PHLYTRI), taking place on 24-26 June, is working on a new Green Race Initiative.
PHLYTRI race organisers have got together with the Fairmount Park Conservancy and event sponsors Nathan Performance Gear and Philadelphia Insurance Companies to implement the new PHLYTRI Green Race Initiative, which continues to minimise the event’s environmental impact on its host venue, Philadelphia’s historic Fairmount Park.
Recognising the impact that 10,000 athletes and spectators can have on the park, PHLYTRI is partnering with the Fairmount Park Conservancy to support the organisation’s Environmental Education Program and the Green Cities, Clean Water initiative with the Philadelphia Water Department.
During the event registration process, PHLYTRI athletes are encouraged to ditch their disposable water bottles and purchase a Nathan Performance Gear Green Race Trail Mix, a reusable two-bottle hydration belt. For each belt sold, 5% of the proceeds are donated directly to the Fairmount Park Conservancy.
PHLYTRI is working closely with the City of Philadelphia Streets Department to place hundreds of recycling bins throughout the event expo and main spectator areas of the course to reduce the amount of trash produced during race weekend.
Additionally, the event is providing its 4,000 registered athletes additional tips to ‘Race Green’ listed on the event website at http://www.phillytri.com/eventinfo/green.
“Through the Green Race Initiative, the 2011 PHLYTRI is continuing to work with our partners to reduce the amount of waste associated with our event, help our athletes race green, and give back to the conservancy efforts in Fairmount Park,” said Richard Adler, CEO of Philadelphia Triathlon LLC.
“By doing so, we can hold an event that is both dynamic for our athletes, while respectful of the environment in which its held, ensuring that future generations of athletes can continue to enjoy events like ours for years to come.”
“The Fairmount Park Conservancy is all about creating positive change in Philadelphia’s park system and that is why we are so excited to partner with the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon’s Green Race Initiative,” said Fairmount Park Conservancy Executive Director Kathryn Ott Lovell. “We are also grateful to receive support for our Environmental Education Program and be a part of this environmentally conscious event in Fairmount Park.”
Founded in 2005, the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon is one of the largest and most popular triathlons in the US. Held in the city’s historic Fairmount Park, the race was named a top-five triathlon in the United States by Outside Magazine, was lauded as one of the top big city triathlons by Inside Triathlon Magazine, and named one of the 10 Greenest Races by Triathlete Magazine.
The PHLYTRI returns for a second year as part of the Life Time Triathlon Series – the oldest and one of the most prominent series of international/Olympic-distance triathlon events in the United States. The main event of the Life Time Series is the premier Race to the Toyota Cup, which challenges the world’s top professional triathletes to battle for points and a chance to win the coveted Toyota Cup.
