With the largest field in event history, nearly 80 paratriathletes are slated to compete next Monday 27 May at the 2013 USA Paratriathlon National Championships, held in conjunction with the Life Time Fitness Tri CapTex event.
Athletes in seven paratriathlon categories will complete a 750m swim, 20K bike and 5K run, vying for national titles and Team USA spots for the 2013 ITU Paratriathlon World Championships. To compete in Paratriathlon Nationals, athletes must have successfully completed any sprint-distance triathlon and finished within 40% of the winning time at the 2012 USA Paratriathlon National Championship in their category.
Gold medallists in Austin will also have an opportunity to compete as part of the USA Paratriathlon National Team for 2013.
In addition to the national championship event, a number of athletes will participate in the Physically Challenged Open Wave, which has no qualification criteria and does not qualify athletes for national titles or world championship slots.
In order to qualify to represent Team USA at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in London, England, on 13 September, US athletes must finish in the top three of their respective divisions. Athletes also may have qualified based on their finish position at the 2013 CAF World Paratriathlon San Diego event, held in April.
When team size is set for the world championship event, more athletes may be added to the team by discretionary selections.
USA Triathlon notes that paratriathlon continues to grow following the decision to add the sport to the 2016 Paralympic Games. The International Paralympic Committee announced in December 2010 that paratriathlon will make its debut at the Paralympic Summer Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
In March, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) released the schedule for the 2013 ITU Paratriathlon season. The calendar covers at least nine cities on five continents, and includes a series of international and continental races. The paratriathlon season will close with the World Championships in Hyde Park, London, as a part of the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final on 11-15 September – in what is expected to be the biggest paratriathlon event to date.
The 2013 USA Paratriathlon National Championships are held in conjunction with the Life Time Fitness Tri CapTex event. This event was originally founded in 1991 and has become one of the most popular multisport races in the US. The ‘Premier Texas Triathlon’ was earlier this year confirmed as part of the 2013 Life Time Triathlon Series and fills the streets of Austin on Memorial Day, selling out with 3,000 participants.
This month, Life Time Athletic Events, the endurance event division of Life Time, ‘The Healthy Way of Life Company’, confirmed that it had fully added the Capital of Texas Triathlon (CapTexTri) to its portfolio.
