Activity Wales, the team that organised the inaugural Ironman Wales in 2011 and currently runs the Long Course Weekend in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has a new ‘ocean going’ event for 2014. The company has confirmed that Fishguard in Wales will be the location of a newly-branded Ocean Lava Middle Distance Championship event.
Headed up by Matthew Evans and Scott Powell – Activity Wales has partnered up with Kenneth Gasque, CEO and Race Director of the Ocean Lava Lanzarote Triathlon in Spain’s Canary Islands.
The newly branded Ocean Lava Wales Triathlon will take place on 2 August in Pembrokeshire and will ‘bare all the hallmarks of a fantastic family fuelled Activity Wales event.’
Fishguard in Wales will line up alongside Madrid, Gran Canaria and Denmark; with a potential of Hong Kong, Holland and the Ukraine being added to the Ocean Lava race list later in the year. According to Activity Wales, ‘24 athletes will qualify for the grand final in Lanzarote’, to be held on 8 November 2014.
Matthew Evans said “Pembrokeshire is the perfect destination for a world class middle distance race, and we have pushed hard not only to drive quality of experience for athletes and supporters at races, but also value. I truly believe the triathlon world is looking for a new brand to fall in love with.”
He continued, “Pembrokeshire has really embraced our races and it gives us all enormous pleasure to bring this new series to North Pembrokeshire. Last year’s Wales Triathlon was the springboard and the welcome we received from the local community, the athlete and supporter experience was incredible and so many athletes have already returned for a [holiday] break as a result of visiting the area for the first time.”
Scott Powell of Activity Wales Events added, “The race that takes in St Davids and the Cathedral, Trefin, Mathry and the towns of Fishguard and Goodwick I think shocked a lot of people. Not only for the beauty of the course, but the crowds that spilled out onto the course too!
“Communities are vital to securing races like this, so I guess this one is down to the people of North Pembs!! Ocean Lava Wales will have a very fast swim and bike course, but the run will be tough. Our courses always reward every discipline and Fishguard will be no different. The winners will be athletes that are strong in all three disciplines, not so much a master of one.”
Kenneth Gasque – Ocean Lava CEO said, “What Activity Wales Events have done in Wales is incredible and the atmosphere and the way they deliver races is very refreshing to see. Ocean Lava is about delivering value and a world class experience and we are confident that Wales will deliver the UK qualifier to unrivalled standards in the UK. I will be there and it will fantastic to catch up with friends new and old on the start of this very exciting journey.
