The international Triathlon de Portocolom is one of the earliest triathlon events in Europe once again in 2014 – with a number of elite triathletes visiting Portocolom in Mallorca, Spain, to fight for victory amidst Mallorca’s stunning scenery – a destination increasingly popular for European cyclists and triathletes alike.
Triathlon de Portocolom is billed as a full sporting weekend with two races on Sunday 13 April 2014 (55.5K and 111K) for 700 triathletes registered thus far, and with a duathlon event for 200 kids on Saturday 12 April. The start of the 111 race will be on Sunday at 08:45 local time and consists of 1K swimming, 100K cycling – with a double ascent of the iconic Sant Salvador climb – followed by a 10K run. The shorter 55.5 event will involve 500m swimming, 50K cycling and 5K running.
Many professionals will be lined up on Saturday for Triathlon de Portocolom’s 17th anniversary. Focus has been on a strong female pro field, including: Diana Riesler, Julia Gager and Susan Blatt from Germany; Ireland’s Eimear Mullan; Austrian Eva Wutti and Sandrine Ben, amongst other participants.
In the male 111K event category, Spain’s long distance rising star Joan Nadal and Miguel Ángel Fidalgo will compete against Belgian Timothy Van Houten, German Markus Hörmann and Fabian Rahn, Austrian Florian Kriegl, Swiss Philipp Gubler and Polish Adam Kacper. For the 55.5K race, participating elites include Oscar Vicente, Miguel Miniño and Christoph Schlagbauer, amongst others.
Across both races, the event organisers are aiming to offer a high quality experience to all participating triathletes – age groupers and elites alike – with athletes’ bag-goodies, side event such as the Expo and the Awards Ceremony, and the TriKids Duathlon for kids, on Saturday 12 April.
Portocolom is an especially pleasant spot to start training and racing in Europe due to generally nice weather in April; and Mallorca has great flight connections to many main European cities. Last year, athletes from 16 different countries visited the event and enjoyed a demanding bike segment after a short swim in the Mediterranean Sea. The competition in 2014 will again be held at the impressive Portocolom Club Nautic.
