Reeling in the Asian market, Century Tuna IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay

The ‘enormous growth of IRONMAN in the Asia-Pacific region’ continues with the addition of the Century Tuna IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay triathlon – the second IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon in the Philippines. The inaugural Century Tuna IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay in Cebu will take place on 8 March 2015, joining the already well-established Cobra Energy Drink IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines event.

IRONMAN brand owner, World Triathlon Corp (WTC) notes that the burgeoning Asia-Pacific region will now host three IRONMAN and eight IRONMAN 70.3 events in 2015.

This latest edition to Asia’s IRONMAN 70.3 circuit continues IRONMAN Asia-Pacific’s long standing partnership with Sunrise Events, a leading sporting event company in the Philippines.

“The growth of the sport in the Asia-Pacific region in the last few years has been extraordinary. We are delighted to add another race to our ever growing IRONMAN calendar, and thrilled to continue to work with the team from Sunrise Events,” said IRONMAN Asia-Pacific CEO, Geoff Meyer.

Wilfred ‘Fred’ Steven Uytengsu Jr, President and Chairman of Sunrise Events, expressed his excitement at the continued growth of triathlon in the Philippines. “We appreciate IRONMAN’s vote of confidence to expand the number of races we have in the Philippines and are excited for the inaugural Century Tuna IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay,” he said.

“This new IRONMAN 70.3 race will capitalise on the popularity of triathlon in the Philippines as well as the interest we receive from triathletes in neighbouring countries.”

The event will offer athletes the opportunity to kick off their season in ideal conditions with the race at the beginning of the Filipino summer. Subic Bay provides a stunning location with white sandy beaches nestled at the foothills of the lush tropical rainforest of the Zambales mountain range.

Subic Bay is 100km from Manila and is widely regarded as the Philippines’s premier sporting playground. Well-known for its diversity of culture, cuisine and leisure activities, the organisers feel that Subic Bay will provide an unforgettable experience.

IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay will offer 30 qualifying slots for the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Zell am See-Kaprun, SalzburgerLand, Austria. Professional athletes at Subic Bay will be competing for a total prize purse of US$15,000.

With Filipinos embracing the sport of triathlon, IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay forms part of a full calendar of races: with 5150 Subic Bay on 7 June, IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines on 2 August and 5150 Bohol on 8 November.

General registration for IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Bay is now open.
