Movers & shakers in LAVA Magazines’s annual 2015 Kona product count

Bikes on the road at IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii

Cervélo is once again the leader of the pack in the Kona bike count for 2015 – according to the 2015 annual Kona count, which has been issued by LAVA magazine, and which lists those brands counted at the 2015 IRONMAN World Championships presented by GoPro.

LAVA mag’s annual count of bikes and products at Kona continues to represent a useful yardstick for tracking the gear used by pros and the world’s top IRONMAN age groupers. While it may not count 100% of all brands (this year, for example, Bianchi is missing from the bike count), each year the product count does offer up a comprehensive view of the brands finding favour among long distance triathletes.

Cervélo had 522 bikes on stand in Kona in 2015. This is up on the 490 bikes counted for Cervélo in 2014, helping the brand to hold its share this year.

Cervélo claimed 24% of all bikes in the 2015 Kona bike count. The top three bike brands in the Kona bike count – Cervélo, Trek and Specialized – have seen their combined share fall on previous years. Last year, 2014, saw the top three hold a 49% combined share. Yet, 2015 saw the top three bikes claim a 46% share in the bike count. This is also below the 47% recorded in 2012 and the 45% share for the top three bikes in 2013.

Of the top three, Specialized dropped two share points, while the share for Cervélo and Trek was slightly down or broadly static year on year.

The erosion in share for the leading bike brands can be explained by an increase in the total number of bikes counted year on year, and a fragmentation in the number of bike brands at Kona. (There were 81 bike brands counted in 2015, compared to 69 brands featured in the 2014 Kona bike count.)

Cervélo does remain in a strong lead. With 522 bikes in total for Cervélo in 2015, this is 247 more than second placed Trek.

The top 10 bike brands claimed 77% of all bikes counted. A number of brands within the top 10 saw increased numbers of bikes present in 2015, versus 2014, including: Felt, Argon 18, BMC, Scott, Quintana Roo, Cannondale, Ceepo. Also, gaining share in 2015 and edging closer to the top 10 with an increasing number of bikes present were Canyon and Dimond.

Zipp was once again a clear winner in the wheel count, with over 2,000 individual Zipp wheels taking on the Kona lava fields. Zipp maintained its number one position in 2015, and it has been the top wheel brand for a number of years.

In the wheel count, Zipp, ENVE and Mavic were the top three favoured brands by Kona athletes (combining carbon and aluminium wheel variants). Although, it is worth noting that ENVE leapfrogged Mavic, and HED, to claim the second spot in 2015.

Having overtaken Fi’zi:k in 2013, to become the number one saddle brand, ISM consolidated its lead this year. ISM held one third of all saddles counted in 2015, up from 30% in 2014.

The most popular aero bar brand was once again Profile Design. Shimano was again the clear leader in the drivetrains/groupsets used by the pros and age-groupers at Kona. With a strong lead on its rivals, SRAM and Campagnolo, Shimano held an 81% share of all drivetrains/groupsets counted in 2015.

For those power meters spotted at Kona, Quarq held its first place position, having previously jumped from third place in 2011 to first place in 2012. Interestingly, Garmin Vector pedal power meters and Stages crank based power meters made a strong showing in Kona this year. Garmin and Stages took second and third place in the power meter product count in 2015. This is up from fourth and sixth place, respectively, in 2014.

Having held number one position in the pedals count since 2011, France’s LOOK dropped to second place behind Shimano in 2015. For helmets, Rudy Project held its number one position, albeit with a slight decrease in share in 2015. Rudy Project claimed 33% of all helmets counted in 2015, down from 37% in 2014. Giro and Specialized remained the second and third ranked helmets this year.

New for 2015, the Kona count monitored Swim Skin brands used by athletes. Here, ROKA was most popular, followed by blueseventy and TYR. For Compression Sleeves/Socks, Compressport was the most popular brand in 2015, with 2XU and CEP taking second and third place. Another new area for the Kona count this year is wearable GPS, which saw Garmin a clear leader followed by Polar and Suunto.
