High on a mountain top with Evergreen Endurance

Evergreen Endurance - Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

On 12-13 September 2015, the Valley of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in south-eastern France will host athletes from all over the world to take part in a new long distance triathlon event: Evergreen Endurance.

Evergreen Endurance has three events on its program and offers ‘a new reference in international long distance triathlon’:

  • Evergreen 228: 4K swim, 181K bike, 43K run
  • Evergreen 228 as a relay team of 3 people
  • Evergreen 118: 2K swim, 95K bike, 21K run

Athletes will swim in the beautiful Montriond Lake (near Morzine – Haut-Savoie), will ascend five high passes by bike via Savoie and Haute-Savoie (Joux Verte, Joux Plane, Romme, Colombière, Aravis) and will run on some of the most beautiful running trails of the Chamonix Valley. This takes athletes through the Montenvers, Forbes Signal, Grand Balcon Nord, Aiguille du Midi mid station, before heading down to Chamonix town center where the local crowd will welcome them on ‘one of the most beautiful finish lines in the world.’

The inaugural event will offer a ‘unique showcasing of pristine lakes, dizzying road switch-backs and verdant trails’, on which athletes will have to swim, bike and run their way through a total of 228 kilometres with an elevation of +7500m (Evergreen 228) / +3300m (Evergreen 118).

The organising team add that Evergreen 228 is poised to enter into the very small circle of exceptional long distance triathlon races in a unique landscape.

Evergreen or green at all costs
Beyond the sporting challenge that will be offered by Evergreen 228 and 118, an even stronger environmental theme will be the true motivation and foundation of the event. Team Evergreen has developed in collaboration with the Chamonix Valley Community as well as green experts in the field, a long term environmental strategy to aim at:

  1. A neutral carbon footprint within 3 years.
  2. A minimized carbon footprint of the organization and of the competitors
  3. An innovative fundraising mechanism to mobilize athletes and help fund key environmental projects in the Chamonix Valley and in the region

The Evergreen team add that these ambitious goals will endeavour to reach a change of attitude, by adopting a plethora of innovative solutions that will be implemented in full transparency (for example, an independent green audit of the event will be conducted annually and the conclusions of this audit will be made public).

Being able to contribute to environmental preservation, promote a change of attitude, and drive forward environmental responsibility in triathlon is seen as an everyday objective for Evergreen.

Race organiser Bruno Lebeda added, “It’s really a very attractive project. Having such objectives for a triathlon of this scale is truly a first. We want to create a new standard in sustainability and environmental requirement for the world of triathlon and more generally the world of endurance sports and the public.”

The Evergreen Endurance event was created by Bruno Lebeda and Carlton Rowlands, two experienced endurance athletes and enthusiasts, with the full support of Chamonix Valley.
