IRONMAN drops two new races in Italy

IRONMAN swim start in Italy

Having announced two new M-Dot races in Italy this October, as part of a wider European expansion, IRONMAN has this month withdrawn the new races from the 2016 IRONMAN European Tour.

The cancellation of the two new races – IRONMAN Civitavecchia and IRONMAN 70.3 Rome – was confirmed by the local team on the IRONMAN 70.3 Italy Facebook page.

Civitavecchia was to be the first full-distance IRONMAN event in Italy with the IRONMAN Civitavecchia triathlon originally scheduled for 16 October 2016; while Rome was to host the IRONMAN 70.3 Rome triathlon on 20 August 2016.

The withdrawal of the two new races leaves established event IRONMAN 70.3 Pescara, which takes place on 12 June 2016, flying the flag for the IRONMAN brand in Italy.

The statement on the IRONMAN 70.3 Italy Facebook page was as follows…

Unfortunately, IRONMAN 70.3 Rome and IRONMAN Civitavecchia will not be part of the 2016 IRONMAN European Tour. Growing the number of races in Italy remains a top priority for us and we will continue to explore opportunities for expansion.

We recommend IRONMAN Mallorca (www.ironman.com/mallorca), IRONMAN Zurich (www.ironman.com/switzerland) and IRONMAN 70.3 Pescara (www.ironman.com/pescara70.3) as alternatives for athletes.
