IRONMAN has announced the acquisition of multiple events from SUPERFROG, including the SUPERFROG, SUPER SEAL and SEAL Sprint triathlons – created and designed by Navy SEALs. The SUPERFROG triathlon will be rebranded as IRONMAN 70.3 SUPERFROG and will take place on Sunday 27 September 2015.
The acquisition follows a partnership between Ironman and Superfrog last September – under which Superfrog became the first qualifier race for the Military Division of the 2015 Ironman World Championship triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.
“It is a privilege for us to combine the profound tradition of SUPERFROG with IRONMAN’s historic military roots,” said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer of IRONMAN. “We look forward to building upon the foundation of this great event and expand our offerings to military members.”
The IRONMAN 70.3 SUPERFROG triathlon will lead athletes through a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run on a course that utilizes the beautiful city of Coronado, California. The race will start with a double-loop 1.2-mile swim in the Pacific Ocean.
Athletes will then begin a quadruple-loop 56-mile bike course that will travel along scenic Highway 75. The course is flat and fast and features beautiful ocean views. The double-loop 13.1-mile run offers mixed terrains including sand, trails and pavement, and travels up and down the California coastline and through the Silver Strand Training Complex/Naval Special Warfare Advanced Training Command. An energetic finish line awaits athletes just off of the beach.
“Since 1979, SUPERFROG has prepared racers to do the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona,” said Moki Martin, Founder/Race Producer of SUPERFROG. “This race continually redefines the challenge of triathlons with ocean swims and sand runs on the beaches where Navy SEALs train. SUPERFROG has been about competing with the best to be the very best.”
The SUPERFROG triathlon was designed by Navy SEALs to not only help SEALs prepare for what was then the newly created IRONMAN triathlon in Hawai’i but to also provide the Navy Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) and SEAL Teams a physical training event that was both multi-faceted and competitive.
In continuation of military support, a portion of the proceeds for each general registration will go to the Navy SEAL Foundation, the Optimists Club of Coronado and the Islander Sports Foundation through the IRONMAN Foundation. IRONMAN 70.3 SUPERFROG will also offer 300 discounted slots for members of the military.
IRONMAN 70.3 SUPERFROG will offer 30 age-group slots to the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship taking place in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. IRONMAN 70.3 SUPERFROG also serves as a Military Division Qualifier and will offer 14 qualifying slots for eligible military athletes to the 2016 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i.
General registration and military registration for IRONMAN 70.3 SUPERFROG will open on Monday, 26 January 2015 at 12:00 pm ET.
The SUPER SEAL and SEAL Sprint triathlons will take place on 15 March 2015 and are already open for registration.
