IRONMAN has confirmed that its IRONMAN Lake Tahoe and IRONMAN 70.3 Lake Tahoe events have been discontinued for 2016. Both event pages on the IRONMAN website state that, after careful consideration, the events will not be extended.
A statement on each event page continued…
We appreciate the efforts and support of the city, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone else involved in putting on this triathlon. We would also like to thank all of the athletes who have raced with us here. We appreciate your dedication and understand your disappointment with not being able to race.
Alternative IRONMAN 70.3 events have been put forward:
- IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder, Boulder, Colorado
- IRONMAN 70.3 Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Last year’s events were hit by poor air quality due to wildfires in the area; and due to unsafe air quality conditions in the Lake Tahoe basin in California – IRONMAN Lake Tahoe 2014 and IRONMAN 70.3 Lake Tahoe 2014 were forced to cancel on Sunday 21 September 2014.
The decision to cancel the event involved recommendations from the State of California and Placer County health officials. Officials advised the organizing team that the high levels of PM2.5 (particulate matter) being recorded last September in Lake Tahoe were at unsafe and unhealthy levels for both the athletes and the public.
