National governing body USA Triathlon (USAT) has launched a new Find a Coach tool that allows athletes to search for USA Triathlon Certified Coaches based on location, specialty, level or discipline.

Users can click on each coach’s name for more details including company name, location, level, specialties, disciplines, background and contact information. An athlete can contact a coach directly from the site and access the coach’s website.

This new functionality aims to provide a streamlined process for athletes to obtain coach information and easily gain access to USA Triathlon’s database of over 2,500 Certified Coaches.

USA Triathlon currently offers five different Coaching Certifications starting at Level I, Level II and Level III. Once certified, coaches may also focus on specific certifications including Youth & Junior and Level II Endurance.

In order to be a USA Triathlon Certified Coach, a coach first needs to be one of approximately 450 people that are selected from thousands of applicants every year. These coaches are chosen for specific triathlon coaching aptitude and experience and coaching and triathlon community goals.

Accordingly, a coach can only become certified by gaining admission to the selective program and then attending a two-day class taught by USA Triathlon’s top ‘thought leaders’ and then passing a comprehensive exam. USA Triathlon Certified Coaches are seen as being uniquely and highly qualified to do many things within swim, bike and run, including:

  • Analyze swim stroke and find the missing pieces to help athletes become more efficient swimmers and thrive in open water
  • Help achieve running breakthroughs off the bike through revised training to generate physical adaptations that can be leveraged on race day
  • Help generate added power on the bike without compromising the run

USA Triathlon Certified Coaches are ‘adept at helping you holistically; not only solving the puzzle of training for all three sports, but also injury prevention, optimizing training and race-day nutrition, managing the often overlooked transition skills, mental preparation, and last but not least, recovery.’

Certified Coaches are held to the highest safety standards and must complete a comprehensive re-certification process every two years to ensure they have the necessary insights on the changing coaching and multisport landscape.
