Training tips for Windsor Triathlon 2016 from pro Stuart Hayes

Stuart Hayes took the crown at the 2015 Windsor Triathlon with a blistering time of 1:56:22, and is encouraging others to sign up and take him on at the popular UK event in 2016. As well as competing in next year’s event on 12 June, he has offered advice for those joining him at the triathlon to help them get the best possible results.

Speaking firstly about what makes Windsor different to other triathlons Stuart said “The Windsor Triathlon course really is special; it’s a town steeped in history and to run so close to the castle and through the town always makes for a great atmosphere and it’s very spectator friendly. There is so much to do with all the tents and brilliant food, it’s always a great day out for competitors and spectators.”

He continued, “It’s great to race in the surroundings of Windsor – it lifts you and I love every minute of it. Doing the Windsor Triathlon should feature on all triathletes race calendars as it’s great for all capabilities. I especially like the bike course as it provides lots of long straight roads so you can really get some good speed up.”

Preparation is key to any race and as a professional triathlete, Stuart knows the key to a successful race day is to prepare fully the night before. “I always get a good clean meal in and try to have as much sleep as possible, it’s all about staying relaxed and doing what you do day in day out.”

The swim section of the course through a section of the River Thames is known for its unpredictable current. Stuart advises a tactical approach, “The current can be powerful so stay near the bank when the current works against you and swim down near the middle when coming back downstream.”

Stuart powered ahead in the bike section at last years’ event, being the fastest rider on the day completing 42K in 56:45. He offers his advice on how others can improve their time. “Success in the bike section comes from putting in the miles combined with the quality of the training. My training plan by Michelle Dillon is thought out to the very last detail, we leave no stone unturned and make the workouts relevant to the courses.

“For Windsor there are a lot of long TT efforts mixed with sustained high tempo riding. Each year I head to Spain for our warm weather training camp so maximise the mountains and come back strong ready to compete.”

Stuart is part of Team Dillon, which has notched up a successful record at Windsor. “I was the first to do Windsor Triathlon and passed on a few tips to Michelle Dillon before she competed. This helped us prep Emma Pallant for when she toed the line and won the event,” Stuart noted.

“From our race experience and as coaches we now pass on all our knowledge onto Team Dillon triathlon team. We have a fantastic bunch of athletes who love competing in the event and each year we get more and more of our athletes racing!”
