For the 2016 race season, Zoot Sports is presenting a new racing shoe for runners and triathletes alike: the Makai, a neutral trainer positioned as being suitable for all distances.
Zoot notes that the unique sole construction makes the Makai attractive for a broad range of runners, and weighing only 265g (US size 9) it is lightweight. With convenience in mind, the Zoot Makai comes with both the Quicklace lacing system and traditional laces.
The new Zoot Makai shoes will commence shipping in February 2016. In the UK, the recommended retail price (RRP) is £115, with an RRP of US$135 in the US.
Zoot was ‘born in Kona, Hawaii, but has grown up at the beautiful beaches of California.’ The design and the name of the Makai pay homage to the journey of the brand: ‘Makai’ means ‘towards the sea’, symbolizing the move of the Zoot headquarters to Carlsbad in California.
The shoe design is ‘bold and wild’. The Makai sports a midsole with an 8 mm offset and comes with two different degrees of cushioning. As a result, Zoot points out that the trainer is suitable for multiple weight categories and adapts to individual running style and performance level.
Z-Bound inserts at the heel area absorb shock while ‘keeping the dynamics and versatility of the Makai.’ In addition, fore- and midfoot runners benefit from ZVA, Zoot’s trademark EVA, and a ‘phenomenal rebound’.
While the upper is constructed of breathable mesh, the three-dimensional heel cup keeps the heel securely in its place.
A release from Zoot adds, ‘Due to its great success in the world of triathlon, we have integrated the BareFit technology that provides you with ultimate comfort and a seamless internal fit even without socks.’
Particularly handy for triathletes, Zoot delivers the Makai both with traditional lacing and the Quicklace system (including Z-Lock, an elastic strap making sure no loose laces disturb the running stride). Quicklace facilitates quick shoe application and removal and can be used for transition from bike to run, or for other types of stand-alone run races.
The Makai outsole provides stability and aims to create a smooth transition through the entire run stride ‘with just the right amount of guidance.’ Zoot has also added high traction carbon rubber at the heel area in order to make the Makai as resilient and durable as possible.
Zoot Sports was founded as ‘the world’s first triathlon brand’ on Hawaii in 1983. The brand focuses on providing athletes with performance footwear, apparel, wetsuits, and accessories. In the mid-90s, Zoot moved to Carlsbad, California. Inspired by the Californian way of life, a second, independent product line was born. Zoot Running footwear and apparel combines the brand’s technological expertise with relaxed surfer styling. Zoot is part of the K2 Sports Group.
