In late December, IRONMAN confirmed the addition of a new IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon in China, which is scheduled to take place on 6 November 2016 in the port city of Xiamen, on China’s southeast coast.
Previously in Jixian, Tianjin, in 2011 IRONMAN had to cancel the 2011 IRONMAN China and IRONMAN 70.3 China races following challenges in obtaining necessary race permits.
The return of IRONMAN to China looks set to mark a turning point for the M-Dot brand, particularly in Asia, following its new ownership by China’s Dalian Wanda Group, and the integration of Wanda Group’s Infront Sports & Media business unit and IRONMAN into a newly formed entity named Wanda Sports Holding.
The new IRONMAN 70.3 Xiamen will offer 50 age-group qualifying slots for the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship taking place in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA and 15 qualifying slots for the 2017 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i.
Registration and course information for the new 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 Xiamen event will be released in the coming weeks.
