IRONMAN has secured a 10-year partnership with Sport Singapore, and will now become the operator of the annual Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS), beginning with this year’s event.
With IRONMAN Endurance Asia’s acquisition of Spectrum Worldwide, which has organised the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore since 2013, and the backing of Wanda Sports as its parent company, IRONMAN states that it has ‘the strength to grow the marathon both in scale and stature’.
The deal to operate the Singapore Marathon follows IRONMAN’S acquisition of New Zealand’s largest road race, the Auckland Marathon back in 2014, and the major purchase of Lagardère Sports’ endurance division in early 2016.
Sport Singapore selected IRONMAN ‘based on its strong long-term sustainability, new strategies to grow the marathon, and expertise in organising mass participation events globally’.
The Marathon Singapore started in 1982 and over the past five years has had approximately 260,000 athletes participate.
“As we celebrate Marathon Singapore’s 15-year partnership with Standard Chartered Bank as title sponsor, we have reached an important milestone to reflect and review what’s next for Singapore’s signature running event,” said Mr. Lim Teck Yin, CEO of Sport Singapore.
“IRONMAN presented an all-encompassing proposal that resonated with us based on their extensive endurance expertise and reach, with more than 260 global events. We believe that IRONMAN has the right acumen to grow the stature of the event to a new level for Singaporeans and the international audience.”
This will be IRONMAN’s first running event in Singapore and will be the home of the new IRONMAN Endurance Asia headquarters.
“IRONMAN is committed to delivering exceptional events and we look forward to working with Sport Singapore to raise the profile of the historic Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore to athletes around the world,” said Andrew Messick, Chief Executive Officer of IRONMAN.
“Few industries anywhere are emerging as fast as endurance sports, especially in Asia, and we are pleased to be leading that growth.”
With the addition of the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore, IRONMAN now owns and/or operates five marathons around the world.
IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Holdings company, provides more than 680,000 participants annually the benefits of endurance sports through its vast offerings.
“Our footprint and offerings are continuously expanding, especially in Asia, so we are very pleased to be launching our new IRONMAN Endurance Asia headquarters here in Singapore, with the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore being the focal point to continue to lead that growth in the region,” said Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of IRONMAN Asia.
The Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore is the only IAAF Gold Label race in Southeast Asia, and will be celebrating its 15th anniversary on 4 December 2016.
