11-time IRONMAN Champion and 2015 ITU Long Distance World Champion, Mary Beth Ellis, has announced her retirement from professional triathlon – with the 2016 IRONMAN World Championship to be her final race. Ellis, affectionately known as the ‘Honey Badger’ for her tenacious style of racing, has outlined her future plans to start a family, launch her coaching career with Trisutto.com as well become an event ambassador for the TOUGHMAN Triathlon Series. (Back in June this year, Trisutto.com, billed as ‘the world’s leading triathlon coaching team’, and TOUGHMAN, the ‘second largest long-distance triathlon series in the western hemisphere’, have announced a multi-year partnership.)
Mary Beth Ellis said…
“It is with a heavy heart that I will be announcing my retirement from professional triathlon. My last race will be on the lava fields this Saturday. It has been an incredible journey, and I am so very grateful and proud of my time in triathlon. I have struggled with this decision, but ultimately it is time for me to move on from this amazing experience and try to start having a family.
“I will of course always remain an athlete. But mostly, I’ll enjoy women’s triathlon from the side-lines rather than the battlefield. Thank you to all the amazing female athletes who I have had the pleasure to train alongside and race against. You have truly made my time unforgettable and pushed me to get the most out of myself. It wouldn’t have been the same without you all and I will cherish our times together on and off the race course forever.
“I look forward to one last battle with you all amongst the lava this weekend. I plan to continue to stay active in the triathlon community from WTC to TOUGHMAN to grassroots racing. Firstly, I owe triathlon many, many hours of volunteering at races in an attempt to repay all it has done for me. In addition, I will support kids in triathlon with races and events on a local and national level starting with the TOUGHMAN kids races.
“I will be launching my coaching career with Trisutto.com and plan to start a team to support my athletes. The Honey Badger Team will also be dedicated to giving back to the triathlon community with donations of time and money.”
