Going forwards, two Italian saddle giants, Selle Italia and Selle San Marco, will work ever more closely together on R&D and production following confirmation that Selle Italia has taken a majority stake in Selle San Marco.

Selle Italia President Giuseppe Bigolin has confirmed a majority acquisition of shares in Selle San Marco. “We have gained more than 50% of the shares of Selle San Marco,” Bigolin said. “Both companies together generate a turnover of €30 million, of which €23 million by Selle Italia.”

Giuseppe Bigolin intends to be the main point of contact for the future governance of the Selle San Marco brand and will ‘bring together the two oldest and most famous brands in the history of Italian cycling in order to benefit from a high level of industrial synergy.’

With a long history in bicycle accessories and saddles, Selle San Marco and Selle Italy date back to 1935 and 1897 respectively. The two brands will continue to operate independently but ‘great importance will be given to cooperation between the two companies, especially in regard to research and development and the supply chain.’

Selle Italia also aims to achieve synergies with Selle San Marco in terms of marketing, with the ability to further internationalize both brands. “The two brands are complementary, we have a distinguished audience [so] that we are sure of not eroding each others’ market share,” a company spokesperson said.
