Solos smart eyewear for cyclists showcased at CES 2016

Solos smart eyewear from Kopin

Kopin, one of the new kids on the block pushing a smart eyewear solution for cyclists, is showing its new Solos smart eyewear at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Available in Q2 2016 for an MSRP of US$499, Solos is being displayed at the CES 2016 Fitness and Technology Marketplace, Sands A-B Booth #74334.

Solos allows cyclists to access and share performance data on a head-up display in real-time wirelessly from their smartphone or wearable fitness device.

“Solos was designed for the most dedicated cyclist in mind. A ‘Bio-Inspired’ philosophy ensures every detail of its design is engineered to seamlessly integrate with the way human body moves and operates,” said Dr. Ernesto Martinez, Director of Sports Performance Wearables of Solos.

“Solos delivers a truly holistic platform of critical sensory information to a cyclist, which can be shared with trainers, coaches, teammates and friends.”

Solos has been analyzed and tested in wind tunnels to ensure optimal comfort and reduced drag when in use. Resting comfortably on the face, the ‘minimalist and flexible design enables Solos to be compatible with any aerodynamic helmet.’

It features anti-slip temple and nose pads for grip during high-intensity training. The frames are built to be ultra-durable with high-end polycarbonate that shields from impact, wind, dust and shocks.

A key design element of Solos is the Vista virtual screen. It measures only 4mm in height, as small as the size of a human pupil, allowing see-through/see-around vision, while showcasing a large 5-inch virtual display with bright, high-resolution colour graphics.

The screen aims to cut glare so ‘images can be easily read on the sunniest of days’. A new nSight opto-mechanical adjustment further enhances comfort and minimizes eye strain when worn on longer training sessions or trails.

Solos monitors performance metrics such as heart rate, speed, power, pace, cadence, distance, duration and other Bluetooth and ANT+ compatible data. The Solos app captures, streams and syncs data, allowing cyclists to customize workouts while keeping track of target performance levels. It also supports existing training programs and new tool development that enables users to see progress and heighten performance capabilities.

A further feature of Solos is Whisper advanced voice extraction technology that allows voice commands to control the display settings such as ‘caller ID, notifications and social media without lifting a finger’. The integrated near-ear stereo speaker system with ambient monitoring provides control of volume levels to deliver performance cues that can be heard above the noise of the road and wind.

Solos incorporates a new SiMax Li-ion battery which claims double the energy density compared to other commercial Li-ion batteries. The SiMax battery enables a sleek design of Solos, while providing riders with up to 10 hours in a single charge, ‘perfect for long triathlons or mountainous cycling where outlets are not easily accessed.’

Strava integration technology allows users to download GPS routes and upload recorded activity to share with friends. Once the account has been connected with Strava, all training sessions will automatically transfer to them, so sharing information with teammates and friends can be hassle-free.

Delivering advanced performance metrics to iOS and Android phones, Solos comes equipped with Ant+ technology that enables wearable and smartphone devices to effectively share health data. The all-inclusive platform and sensory indicators provide enhanced metrics such as speed, power, pace, heart rate, distance, duration, and other Bluetooth and Ant+ compatible information.

The mission of Solos is to create unique performance-enabled devices meant to inspire endurance athletes to their greatest potential. By creating optimal head-up displays and simplified accessibility to performance data, Solos focuses on catering to today’s endurance athletes. The Solos mission is to ‘be lighter, smaller, smarter and better, all while focusing on the utmost in data collection and delivering safe, intelligent solutions.’
