For the second year, the Henley Swim, inspired by This Girl Can, will be offering a number of free places in the Henley Mile, a renowned open water swimming event taking place in Henley, near London, UK, on 10 July 2016.
The day consists of a number of swimming events in the Thames, open to adults and children aged 8+ and including 3 different distances, the mile, half-mile and 200m. The event takes place on the Henley Royal Regatta course – one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Thames.
The course is boomed, straight and downstream. The event caters for both recreational swimmers and elites: there is a sporting category for those that just want to complete the course at their own pace, and the event also attracts elite swimmers from around the world.
In the spirit of This Girl Can, and in an effort to get more women participating regularly in sport, Henley Swim is offering a number of free places to women aged 16+ who have never swum in an open water swimming event before.
In addition to their free place, they will receive support and training tips from the Henley Swim team, along with advice to help them make the transition from the pool to open water.
For a chance to win one of the free places the women will have to answer a few questions about themselves, and why they wish to take up the challenge. They will also be asked to blog about the entire experience, and so motivate others to pick up the sport.
Jeremy Laming, co-founder of the Henley Swim said “We are delighted to launch this competition for the second year. Last year our This Girl Can swimmers were amazing in their swimming and their blogging, and we know that at least three of them will be returning to Henley this summer to swim again.”
He continued, “They in turn inspired others to try the sport; they all moved massively out of their comfort zones, but the sense of achievement at the end of the race was enormous. We can’t wait to meet this year’s This Girl Can swimmers.”
The closing date for entries for the competition is Sunday 20 March 2016.

The Henley Mile is one of a number of events organised by The Henley Swim, which also includes the Henley Classic, an upstream 2.1K swim setting off at dawn, the Thames Marathon a 14K swim from Henley Bridge to Marlow Bridge, and the Club to Pub a summer evening swim ending with a BBQ at The Angel pub. The Henley Mile is open to men and women aged 14-75. There are also junior races for age 8 upwards.
