The inaugural STARMAN Night Triathlon is counting down, as the event gets set to take place in the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands on 19-20 August 2017. The middle distance triathlon with a difference will start at midnight on Saturday 19 August, when competitors will slip into the black waters of Loch Morlich for a 1.2 mile swim to start the challenge.
This will then be followed by a 56-mile cycle along the windy, silent, Speyside roads before taking on the summit of the Cairn Gorm as the final stage for a wild mountain run.
Managed by True Grit Events, a new event management company based in Aberfeldy, in the Highlands of Scotland, the STARMAN Night Triathlon is billed as ‘a sleepless, tough, intimidating endurance challenge set under the Scottish stars’.
Targeted at existing triathletes and fitness addicts looking for a different challenge, the STARMAN Night Triathlon offers something different as a night-time, mid-distance event. Participants must have experience of open-water swimming, navigation, off-road running and hill climbing of at least 2500ft and can enter individually or as a relay team.
In a release from the team at True Grit Events Sports, journalist and frequent extreme triathlon competitor Sean McFarlane is quoted as saying, “I can’t wait for the inaugural Starman Night Triathlon. Racing at night is just such an exciting format and the Cairngorms will be a magnificent setting for this truly novel event. Bring it on!!”
Dougie Vipond, musician and BBC presenter added, “The Starman Triathlon is coming round far too quickly!! Is it really August??! Training will start one day; but in the meantime I’m very much looking forward to a midnight swim, an energy drink fuelled spin on the bike and then a walk up a few hills to greet the rising sun. If I make it to the finish it will be a welcome bonus. Canny wait!
Set up by Andrew Hastings and Caroline MacKechnie, True Grit Events ‘create, build and deliver exceptional endurance challenge events’. The company’s mission is to ‘run unique and challenging events in spectacular places, giving everyone the opportunity to go further, train harder and achieve more than they ever thought possible’.
Caroline MacKechnie, Director of True Grit Events said “We’ve had a great response so far to the STARMAN Night Triathlon, with triathletes really looking forward to finding their True Grit in this tough night-time challenge. Despite all the training involved and them having to push themselves to the limit during the event, we know that running through the Cairngorms as dawn breaks as a finale will make it all worthwhile.”
In June 2017, True Grit Events also managed The Cateran Yomp for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. The Yomp is an ultra-endurance challenge that saw almost 1000 participants walking or running 54 miles of the Cateran Way. The event has reportedly been an incredible success for the Soldiers’ Charity and is expected to raise £350,000 this year.
