British Triathlon and RLSS have confirmed that entries are now open for the first ever SH2OUT open water swim at the ITU World Triathlon Series Leeds 2018. The event will be part of a weekend of swim, bike and run events taking place on 9-10 June 2018.

The SH2OUT open water swim offers either a 400m or 750m distance swim on Saturday 9 June, each priced at £20. Entry is available online and is part of the SH2OUT campaign launched earlier this year by British Triathlon and RLSS UK to ensure that open water swimming is conducted within a safe environment and that participants have a positive introduction to the sport.

A spokesperson for the RLSS UK charity said “As part of our work in drowning prevention, RLSS UK has taken action to make safe open water swimming more accessible to those who want to take part. We aim to lead in hosting more open water swims for all ages and abilities around the UK as well as work to help secure more safe open water swimming sites to make the activity more accessible to all, including triathletes who want to train or gain more experience of open water swimming.”

Ian Howard, President of British Triathlon added “It’s really exciting to be able to launch the SH2OUT swim today. The ITU World Triathlon Leeds is our showpiece event for triathlon here in Great Britain and provides an opportunity to swim, bike and run for all abilities. By staging an open water swim in partnership with the RLSS we hope to bring open water swimming to a wider audience in a safe environment. Some newcomers will gain sufficient confidence in the water to go on and compete in our aquathlon or triathlon events in the future.”

Wayne Coyle, Event Director for the ITU World Triathlon Leeds added “We are delighted to host a SH2OUT event this year at ITU World Triathlon Leeds. Open water swimming is a key element to the triathlon experience; and the chance to encourage more people into open water swimming is a great opportunity to reduce one of the main barriers to entry for triathlon in the future.”

Alongside the SH2OUT swim, the ITU World Triathlon Series event in Leeds also hosts GO TRI, sprint and standard distance triathlon events over the weekend of 9-10 June 2018 offering an opportunity to take part for all abilities.

Once the amateur triathletes have finished their Sunday racing, it will be the turn of the world’s best triathletes as they compete in the fourth stop of the ITU World Triathlon Series in front of over 70,000 fans in the heart of Leeds city centre.

The ITU World Triathlon Leeds 2018 is supported by National Lottery funding and is organised by British Triathlon, in partnership with Leeds City Council, UK Sport and the ITU.
