The new Trofeo Granfondo delle Alpi (Gran Fondo of the Alps trophy) is ‘born from the friendship and collaboration’ among the organizers of three reputed European Gran Fondo events. The new sportive/Gran Fondo embraces Italy and France and registrations opened from 1 March 2017.
Running across four events from May through to July 2017, and presented by ASD Fausto Coppi On The Road, the organizers of the prestigious La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare Gran Fondo, together with Mercan’Tour Bonette, Mercan’Tour Turini and Risoul Queyras, have brought together four Gran Fondos, which take place in the Italian and French Maritime Alps.
Under the umbrella of Trofeo Granfondo delle Alpi, the four-in-one challenge is billed as a unique cycling experience. The route joins the cycling communities in Italy and France, ‘offering challenging and stunning routes, not only promising difficulties but also amazing panoramas.’
Registrations are open from 1 March 2017, ending on 15 May 2017. The fee for the entire route is €120.
On 28 May 2017, cyclists participating in the trophy will undertake the first Gran Fondo of the circuit: the Mercan’Tour Turini Café du Cycliste. This event is running its inaugural edition. Known all over the world thanks to the Monte Carlo rally, the Turini Mountain (1607m) with its hairpin bends, is one of the hills that ‘French cyclists prefer and fear the most’.
The Mercan’Tour granfondo offers one route alone, 125km (+3500 m of total ascent). At just an hour from Nice and the French Riviera, cyclists will cross a ‘wild and preserved environment at the edge of the Mercantour region’.
On 18 June 2017 the second event of the Trofeo Granfondo delle Alpi circuit will take place. The Mercan’Tour Bonette Café du Cycliste, with its 4600 m of total ascent, is billed as Europe’s highest Gran Fondo. The granfondo route (180km) offers a ‘triptych of dreamy mountains’: Col de la Cayolle (2326m), Col de la Bonette (2802m) and Col de la Couillole (1678m), inside the Parc Nationale Français du Mercantour (Provence Alpes Marittimes French Riviera region).
On 9 July 2017, the trophy moves to Italy with the international granfondo La Fausto Coppi Le Alpi del Mare, ‘one of the most fascinating and hardest European cycling marathons’. More than 3,000 cyclists, from five continents, will meet in Cuneo, with starting point in the central Piazza Galimberti. There are two eligible routes: a Mediofondo of 111km (Cuneo > Colle Fauniera 2884 m > Madonna del Colletto 1304 m > Cuneo, 2550 m total ascent) and the Gran Fondo of 177km (Cuneo > Colle di Valmala 1380 m > La Piatta 1136 m > Colle Fauniera 2484 m > Madonna del Colletto 1304 m > Cuneo, 4125 m total ascent).
The Trofeo Granfondo delle Alpi will end in France with the Risoul Queyras Jollywear marathon, which will take place on 30 July 2017 in Risoul. A ski station, Risoul has been a stage of the Tour de France (2014) and the Giro d’Italia (2016). The Gran Fondo offers a route of 140km (3700m total ascent) which faces the legendary Col de l’Izoard (2361m) with its monument dedicated to Bobet and Coppi. Downhill the Izoard cyclist will head to Saint Veran (2060 m) and then up to Risoul.
At the end of the final race, following the Risoul, an awards ceremony is planned on 30 July 2017 to crown the winner’s of the Trofeo Granfondo delle Alpi.
