IMG, the ‘global leader in sports, events, media and fashion’, has confirmed the addition of an all-new event to the Escape Triathlon Series, the Surf City Escape Triathlon. Set to take place on Sunday 22 April 2018, in Huntington Beach, California, this race will serve as the last chance qualifier for the iconic 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon (on Sunday 3 June 2018 in San Francisco, California).
The Surf City Escape Triathlon will offer an Olympic distance race with a pro field and US$20,000 prize purse, as well as Olympic, Sprint and Aqua Bike race categories for age group participants. Registration for the new event will open on Wednesday 13 December 2017.
The Olympic distance Surf City Escape Triathlon will begin with a challenging 1-mile open water swim in the Pacific Ocean, entering through the same beach break as the world-renowned US Open of Surfing. Triathletes will swim along the shoreline with the backdrop of the famous Huntington Beach Pier.
A 12-mile, double-loop bike course will then take athletes along the Pacific Coast Highway. Showcasing the Pacific Ocean coastline, IMG adds that the entire course is flat and fast. ‘Coveted road closures along Pacific Coast Highway will allow athletes plenty of room for a safe, fast ride and for spectators to capture all the action.’
The final 6.2-mile run will turn up the challenge as it takes athletes to the pristine beach for a deep sand run then back to the spectator-friendly beachfront start/transition/finish.
“The city of Huntington Beach is an amazing partner, and we couldn’t have asked for a more picturesque backdrop than Surf City USA,” said James Leitz, Senior Vice President, Action Sports and Mass Participation at IMG. “Any time you combine swim, bike and run with sun, sand and surf, you’ve created a one-of-a-kind experience.”
The inaugural Surf City Escape Triathlon will award the top three finishers per age group coveted entry slots into the 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. First place finishers in each age group will win a complimentary race entry.
