The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has announced that ITU President Marisol Casado has been elected to the Council of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) at the organisation’s General Assembly held in Aarhus, Denmark.
Casado, also an IOC member, was elected to one of the four vacancies on the six-member ASOIF Council, and will serve on a two-year term until 2019. Also elected were IAAF President, Sebastian Coe, World Archery President Ugur Erdener and C K Wu, President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
The newly elected Council members will join Patrick Baumann (FIBA Secretary General) and Patxi Perurena (ICF President) as Council members, under the Presidency of Francesco Ricci Bitti.
After the voting, Casado, the only female member of the ASOIF Council, said “I feel extremely proud to be part of the ASOIF Council. I will serve with dedication, commitment, transparency and loyalty to all Summer Olympic International Sport Federations, as I have always done in the International Triathlon Union.”
She continued, “There are 28 summer international federations and now, as a Council member, I have the responsibility of strengthening the solid link among the summer IFs, the IOC and Organising Committees of Summer Olympic Games. I am committed to making this responsibility my duty and working even more closely with the member federations. It is only with our constant work and dedication that we keep on developing our sports and engaging with the society, as ASOIF has been doing with great commitment under the presidency of Ricci Bitti.”
The ASOIF Council is composed of a President and six Members, all from different International Federations and elected for four-year terms. As per the ASOIF Statutes each Council Member can only serve for a maximum of two consecutive terms. Tasks of the Council include: ‘to prepare, conduct and manage the General Assembly as well as to implement the decisions and resolutions taken by it’.
Casado was also member of the Council between 2011 and 2013.
