IRONMAN has announced the addition of the ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 Davao triathlon in Davao City, Philippines. Following the recent announcement of the first full-distance IRONMAN event in the Philippines, which will take place in Subic Bay on 3 June, the new ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 Davao becomes the second addition to the 2018 race calendar in the Philippines.
ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 Davao takes place on 25 March 2018, as next year marks the 10th anniversary of the first IRONMAN event in the Philippines (Camarines Sur on August 23, 2009).
With races that have taken place in Luzon and Visayas, IRONMAN will now set foot in Mindanao, extending its presence across all three island groups of the Philippines. IRONMAN notes that Davao City has experienced continuous growth and developed infrastructure in recent years to become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines.
Athletes can journey through Davao City’s international airport with direct flights from Manila, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, and will have a wide selection of world-class hotels to enjoy their stay in Davao, which is located on the east coast of Mindanao Island in the Philippines.
“It is always exciting for us to announce the addition of a new event – especially in the Philippines where the enthusiasm of the IRONMAN community is exceptional,” said IRONMAN Asia Managing Director Geoff Meyer. “We launched IRONMAN Philippines in August and sold out all entries in one day. We hope for such to continue that tremendous response as we open registrations of ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 Davao on October 1st.”
ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 Davao participants will enjoy racing through Davao’s fusion of nature and urban infrastructure. The race begins with a 1.9km one-loop swim at the property development of Azuela Cove where the transition area will be located. Athletes will then exit onto the main highway to start the 90km bike. The fast, single-loop bike course heads all the way to the turnaround point at Tagum City.
Athletes will then head back to Azuela Cove for the second transition. They exit out to the flat roads of J.P. Laurel Avenue towards the Abreeza commercial district of Davao to complete the 21km two-loop run course. Participants will be cheered by crowds of spectators lining the streets until the finish line located at the Azuela Soccer Field.
“We at Sunrise Events are excited to be offering a brand-new race in another part of the country next year,” said Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, President of Sunrise Events, which owns and will operate the new event. “Davao will be our next destination for an IRONMAN 70.3 race and we believe this will be well received by local and foreign triathletes alike. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm Davao has expressed in hosting us; and I expect we will see this race steadily grow. We look forward to seeing you all at a new destination.”
Inday Sara Duterte, Mayor of Davao City, added “We are very pleased to host the IRONMAN 70.3 in Davao City starting in 2018. We are excited to hold this international sporting event and make it a platform to show the world the culture, the heritage and the values of Dabawenyos.
