IRONMAN and local Brazilian event organiser Unlimited Sports have announced the addition of the new IRONMAN 70.3 Florianópolis triathlon in Brazil. The inaugural edition of IRONMAN 70.3 Florianópolis will take place on Sunday 22 April 2018 in the capital of Santa Catarina which has hosted IRONMAN Brazil for the past 17 years and is where Tim Don set the IRONMAN world record in May.

This new event will join the global IRONMAN 70.3 race calendar and take the place of the IRONMAN 70.3 Palmas triathlon.

“Brazil has been a region of aggressive expansion for IRONMAN over the past few years and our new event in Floranópolis exemplifies that growth” said Joanna Jordan, Managing Director of Latin America for IRONMAN. “The demand for IRONMAN races continues to flourish in Brazil, and Florianópolis will be an attractive and compelling destination for our athletes and their families.”

One of more than 100 events in the global IRONMAN 70.3 race series, the IRONMAN 70.3 Florianópolis triathlon will lead athletes along a 1.2-mile (1.9K) swim, 56-mile (90K) bike and 13.1-mile (21.1K) run throughout ‘the city that has lived the IRONMAN spirit for almost two decades’. The race will begin in Ingleses Beach with a one-lap swim. After the swim, the one-loop bike course will take participants through a scenic and fast course. Athletes will conclude the race with a three-loop run ‘along sparkling beaches in one of the most beautiful cities in Brazil’.

“Floripa, as locals affectionately call Florianópolis, was the first city in South America to host an IRONMAN race 17 years ago,” said Carlos Galvão, Race Director and head of Unlimited Sports, which owns and operates the new event. “Since then it has turned into a sanctuary for sports, especially triathlon. We are pleased and very excited to host an IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon in Florianopolis.”

The capital of the state of Santa Catarina in the south region of Brazil, Florianópolis is known for its beaches, lagoons and waterfalls. With a history that dates back over 4,000 years, the area is filled with archaeological sites, landmark houses, churches, museums and fortresses with old Portuguese architecture. Activities for athletes include surfing, backpacking, hang gliding and mountain biking.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Florianópolis will offer 30 age-group qualifying slots to the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship taking place on 1-2 September in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.

General registration for IRONMAN 70.3 Florianópolis will open at 10:00 BRT on 28 November 2017.
