Stan’s NoTubes has introduced its new Avion R Pro carbon tubeless wheelset. Based on the Avion disc wheelset, winner of the 2017 Dirty Kanza 200 and a Bicycling Magazine Editor’s Recommendation, the new Avion R adds a high-temperature brake track for rim brake use.

The 21.6mm internal width of the Avion R offers ‘improved cornering and decreased rolling resistance with today’s wider road tyres’. The design of the Avion R rim is based on Stan’s patented Bead Socket Technology. With five patents and 16 years of development, Stan’s rim design results in ‘easier tubeless setup, lighter rotational weight and a more secure interface between the rim and tyre’.

Designed for the wider overall pressure range of road and gravel tyres, Stan’s BST-R rim shape is reinforced for higher pressure road tubeless tyres, while also being compatible with lower pressure, tubeless-ready tyres, and with tubes. This versatile Avion R is compatible with 25mm and 28mm tubeless road tyres specifically designated for pressures up to 115 psi (7.9 bar), while also being compatible with higher volume 32mm to 50mm wide tyres at pressures below 45 psi (3.1 bar).

The reinforced BST-R rim design of the Avion R wheelset also makes it compatible with standard road tubes at pressures up to 115 psi.

Tested in some of the most extreme gravel races in the world, the 41mm deep Avion R rim strikes a balance between aerodynamics and ride quality. While many carbon rims give a harsh ride, Stan’s Radial Impact Absorbing Carbon Technology uses a rim shape and special lay-up process to deliver a ride that’s laterally stiff, while still absorbing radial road vibrations. When combined with 25mm or 28mm tubeless tyres, the Avion R Pro allows the rider to brake later into corners, climb efficiently and roll faster.

In addition to improved handling and decreased rolling resistance, when used with Stan’s NoTubes Sealant, the Avion R Pro wheelset also allows tubeless tyres to seal punctures almost instantly for durability and ride security.

Avion R Pro wheelsets include Stan’s new Neo R Ultimate Speedsync hubs. With five-degree engagement and new bearing positions that minimize axle stress and spin more smoothly, the Neo R provides ‘fast engagement, low drag and excellent durability’. Freehubs are available to fit both Shimano and Campagnolo cassettes.

Avion R Pro wheelsets are laced with Sapim CX-Ray spokes (18 front and 24 rear) and Sapim Secure Lock aluminum nipples. A set of Stan’s Avion R All Weather Blue Compound brake pads is included with each wheelset and is recommended for best performance, though the wheels are also compatible with Swiss Stop Black Prince and Flash Pro Platinum brake pads. Each wheelset also includes quick-release skewers.

Ready for tubeless use right out of the box, the Avion R Pro wheelset includes Stan’s yellow rim tape (already installed) and 55mm tubeless valves.

The Avion R Pro wheelset weighs 1455g and is available now, priced at US$1,055 to US$2,249.
