On Sunday August 12, over 80,000 participants are expected to lace up their running shoes and participate in ‘the world’s largest fun run’, the Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac. Now in its 48th year, City2Surf, voted Australia’s Best Sporting Event in 2017, is one of the country’s most anticipated running events.
Westpac returns for the ninth year in a row as City2Surf’s presenting partner and has had a long-standing and close association with what is one of Australia’s biggest events.
The 14km course spans from Sydney’s Hyde Park through the city’s streets, up the infamous Heartbreak Hill, along New South Head and Military Roads and comes to a finish at the world-renowned Bondi Beach.
Organised by Fairfax Events, and having raised over A$36 million for charity since 2008, City2Surf aims to raise another A$5 million for more than 900 charities this year.
Television personality and Nine Network’s Today news presenter, Sylvia Jeffreys, is an ambassador for the iconic event and will be running to raise funds and awareness for her chosen charity, Youngcare.
“I’m incredibly excited to be running this year’s City2Surf as an ambassador for the event and to help raise much needed funds and awareness for Youngcare,” said Jeffreys. “We aim to continue the City2Surf legacy by raising heaps of cash for a range of deserving charities and I’m honoured to be part of the challenge again this year.”
She continued; “City2Surf is always a huge buzz and has become my favourite community event. It’s a thrill to run alongside thousands of others, young and old, through a city I love and for a cause I am very passionate about. I hope as many people as possible get involved to smash our fundraising goals and enjoy the electrifying atmosphere along Sydney’s streets and down at beautiful Bondi Beach”.
Fairfax Events’ Head of Sport, Sarah Young, noted that City2Surf is much more than just a running event. She said, “Just as participants and spectators have grown to love the unbeatable community atmosphere that City2Surf is famous for, our team are as excited as ever for this incredible event. It’s always so fantastic to see thousands of people get involved, from elite runners, to families, fundraisers, and volunteers, as a wave of people walk, jog or run the iconic course.
“As well as the main event, this year people can expect a beachside event village, live entertainment, food stalls, and much more in the ultimate celebration of our incredible city.”
City2Surf has raised over A$36 million since 2008 when the fundraising tally was first recorded. This year City2Surf aims to help raise another A$5 million for more than 900 charities. Participants can visit Everydayhero to begin their fundraising efforts and donors can also search for charities of their choice to support.
The City2Surf Expo presented by Westpac will also be hosting the Run Nation Film Festival on Saturday 11th August. Now in its fourth tour, the festival has selected ‘the very best running films to leave your heart pounding and your mind mesmerised.’
