Following the opening of registration for Challenge Riccione 2019, on Monday October 15, the first 300 places, available for a special launch price of €175, reportedly sold out within a few hours.
The event was originally launched at the end of 2017, replacing Challenge Rimini in Italy. With the aim of putting next year’s event on the map, the organising team point to ‘lots of interesting new features’ in the pipeline.
Alessandro Alessandri remains Race Director and has confirmed some course changes for 2019. He said “The cycling route will be different from the previous editions but will still have the technical characteristics of previous routes. Continual gradient variety during the bike element, fluidity of the run, spectacular routes and the warm welcome of Romagna will remain our strong points.
“Similar to last year, the start and finish line will be in the Riccione Terme, together with all the race logistics. We are looking into changes to the run route which we will reveal as soon as they have been defined.”
Taking place on May 4-5, 2019, a long weekend in Riccione will not only include the middle distance triathlon race, ‘but also a Festival with a schedule full of side events and other attractions.’
The new Swim-Bike race will make its first appearance after becoming part of the World and European Multisport Championships – with a 1900m swim followed by a 90km cycling component. In accordance with tradition, a Triathlon Sprint and Youth Duathlon will round up the weekend’s program of events.
Race Director Alessandro Alessandri, added “Our desire to carry on Challenge Riccione led us to seek a mutual partnership with Challenge Family. We believe in the event and its potential; and with the creation of this new association, Challenge Italy, we want to ensure that Challenge Riccione will be a regular feature in Riccione for many years to come and above all, transpire to be one of the main events of the national and European race calendar.
“We will be slowly unveiling more and more new attractions to the weekend of events in our aspiration to host not just a spectacular triathlon race but indeed a festival of sport. The date has been set and we look forward to seeing you in Riccione next May 2019.”
Stefano Caldari, Municipal Councilman for Sport and Tourism of Riccione said “After the great experience of last year, we are happy to welcome Challenge once again, a spectacle for those who love sports, an exciting and prestigious event, a race that has become world famous with great athletes. This is how our sports event schedule is consolidated, with more and more national and international events for which the city has become a reference point.”
Zibi Szlufcik, CEO Challenge Family added “Challenge Family is ‘all about the athlete’ and the team led by Alessandro Alessandri portrays this mission perfectly. This partnership, now with an even closer working relationship, will guarantee excellent quality execution of the event.
“As a season opener, with the calm water of the Adriatic Sea, excellent Italian food and famous ‘dolce vita’, a spectacular bike route as well as a flat and fast run course, Challenge Riccione will once again host athletes from all over the world.
“Within a year of relocating from Rimini to Riccione, this event raised its quality standards considerably and we are thankful to the local community, volunteers, tourism board and governmental institutions, as well as partners and sponsors for providing this venue to deliver a world class athlete experience. See you at the finish line!”
