Wanda Sports Holding has announced that ‘the best age-group runners in Europe will now have the chance to qualify in their region for a prestigious, newly-created AbbottWMM Wanda Marathon Age-Group World Championships, culminating at the iconic 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon.’
Runners have the opportunity to battle it out on the streets of Liverpool, Bordeaux and Madrid – as well as an additional 11 venues in Europe – and accumulate points in the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) Wanda Age Group World Rankings – with the top ranked age-group competitors qualifying to race in England’s historic capital city.
The AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Rankings launched at the BMW Berlin Marathon in September. Here, competitors raced in nine different age groups, ‘all looking to guarantee that elusive place in London where they will compete for glory in the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group World Championships.’
In total, there are 50 qualifying marathons taking place around the world in the one-year qualifying-period, which runs through to the final race on September 29, 2019.
Athletes can earn points for their performances during those races, with the top-ranked athletes in each age-group earning the right to race in London in 2020, at the race-within-a-race format, as part of the Virgin Money London Marathon.
For interested runners, places are still available for qualifying races – including three marathons that will be hosted in the spring…
Ociane Groupe Matmut Marathon de Bordeaux Métropole takes place on April 27, 2019, where athletes will ‘enjoy the unique challenge of a twilight race laid down in the charming and picturesque French city of Bordeaux, illuminated by light and the energy of thousands of passionate supporters.’
EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Madrid Marathon takes place on April 28, 2019, and competitors will descend on Spain’s historic capital city, where they will race to the beat of the fervent support of the Madrileños. Athletes will race past landmarks such as the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace of Madrid and will be inspired to race their best in a truly emotive atmosphere.
Just over a month later, on May 26, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Marathon takes place. The race course takes in some of the best-known sights in the city, including The Cavern Club and the Albert Docks, as well as Anfield and Goodison Park, homes to Liverpool Football Club and Everton Football Club, respectively.
