Higher ground: l’Étape du Tour 2019

For its 29th edition, next year on 21st July, l’Étape du Tour 2019 will be enjoying a foretaste of the route between Albertville and Val Thorens that will comprise the 20th stage on the Tour de France.

At an altitude of 2,365m, it will be the highest finish in the history of this cyclo-sportive event. The 15,000 riders expected at the start will cover a distance of 135km and climb a total of 4,563m of positive gradient.

A first record has already been beaten with the announcement of the route for l’Étape du Tour 2019, with the highest finish of its history: Val Thorens with an altitude of 2,365. This is five metres higher than the Col d’Izoard pass where 11,000 riders completed the race in 2017.

Before they get their sights on the highest ski resort in Europe, which has already welcomed a finish of Le Tour in 1994, the riders will have to tackle some demanding climbs, with the ascent of the Cormet de Roselend shortly after leaving Albertville.

They will then plunge down towards Bourg-Saint-Maurice and enjoy some respite as they cross the Isère Valley. At this point, however, they will have to confront the Côte de Longefoy before heading downwards after the village of Notre-Dame-du-Pré.

From there, l’Étape du Tour organisers add that… ‘the quality of their preparation and ability to manage their effort will face a genuine test on a seemingly unending final climb…. Their muscles and lungs will be under the hammer at plenty of different points over a distance of more than 33km with an average gradient of 5.5%. The day’s heroes will have definitely deserved the medal that awaits them after the finishing line!’

Registration for next year’s event opens on A.S.O’s time to platform from Monday 29th October at 12.00 CET.

There are two price bands:

  • €115 per race number for the quickest to register, up to a total entry limit of 15,000 race numbers.
  • €135 for registrations after 5th November and up to a total limit of 15,000 race numbers.

Alongside the leading event that brings a huge amount of riders to the roads of Le Tour in France, race organiser A.S.O adds that there is also a world tour to meet cycling enthusiasts on all the world’s continents.

In 2019, 15 different L’Étape by Le Tour de France events will take place in 10 countries: Mexico, China, United Kingdom, Colombia, USA, Brazil, Thailand, Morocco, Australia and France.
