New Classic Run Series going to the races in 2019

Hollicom Events has joined forces with leading UK publisher Reach and The Jockey Club to launch a series of new mass participation running events at iconic racecourses across the UK. The first three events of the new Classic Run Series take place in the autumn of 2019 at Cheltenham, Aintree and Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.

Each of the horseracing courses are renowned for being the homes of the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup, The Randox Health Grand National and the QIPCO 2000 Guineas.

Mark Hollinshead CEO of Hollicom Events said “The Classic Run Series is a unique set of innovative new running experiences for all the family. The centrepiece event at each racecourse will be the Classic 10km Run which will attract fun runners, fitness fanatics, fundraisers and club runners alike. Each festival of running will also include a Classic 5km run, Junior Run and a Family Mile event.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Reach and all their market leading regional newsbrands to create and deliver such an exciting series of events for their family of readers to part in. The Jockey Club own and manage some of the top racecourses in England and it’s not every day you wake up and say I’m going to run past Becher’s Brook or jog down the Rowley Mile.”

He continued, “Next year that opportunity will become a reality. We’re expecting thousands of runners to take part. We’ve already signed up running legend Liz McColgan and her double Olympian daughter to join us as Classic Run Ambassadors.”

Reach is the largest national and regional news publisher in the UK, with influential newspaper and magazine brands such as the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Sunday People, Daily Record, Daily Star, OK! and leading regional titles including the Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, Birmingham Mail and Bristol Post.

Eilish McColgan, Classic Run Ambassador, Double Olympian and European 5,000m silver medallist said “I’m delighted to be joining the Classic Run Series as a brand ambassador at these brilliant new events. Runners are always on the lookout for a different kind of experience and the Classic Run Series will be just that. I’ll be taking part myself and I’m sure these events will quickly become fixtures on the calendar for the club running community. There is also a large prize money pot which is an extra incentive to take part.”

Running legend Liz McColgan, who will also be taking part in the series, said “Innovation has to be at the heart of sport and the Classic Run Series delivers just that. Opportunities for all the family to come together and run are few and far between. The idea to use racecourses is a brilliant one and I’m sure the events will be a great success. The series also presents a uniquely branded competition for club runners who want to take part in all three events.”

Luke Traynor, GB Athlete, and third fastest Scot ever over the half marathon, is planning to take part in the Aintree Classic 10km Run on September 8th. He said “I love this idea. I’ve seen the courses and they are fast, flat and atmospheric given the history around each venue. It’s a great new opportunity for top runners to compete in a unique setting. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Paul Fisher, Chief Executive of Jockey Club Racecourses, said “We’re delighted to help stage the Classic Run Series at three of Britain’s most iconic racecourses. We’re better known for some of the world’s greatest racehorses running at our tracks, but this is a fantastic opportunity for thousands of runners from all over the UK to follow in their footsteps and experience what it’s like to run past the huge grandstands of Cheltenham, Aintree and Newmarket.

“It’s a great initiative which will introduce a whole new audience to our racecourses and give them the chance to understand and get a better feel for our sport.”

The Classic Run Series will be delivered by Hollicom Events. The dates of events are:

  • Cheltenham, Sunday September 1st, 2019
