By the numbers: USA Triathlon infographic on 2017

National governing body USA Triathlon (USAT) has produced an infographic to summarise the year 2017. Ranging from the number of hours spent on course by athletes, through to the miles of toilet paper purchased for USAT’s four owned national championship events, podium and medal performances – the infographic gives a helpful breakdown on the year.

The ‘by the numbers’ information was compiled in late November/early December by USA Triathlon staff members; so some numbers (sanctioned events, for example) do not reflect the exact year-end totals.

As it stands, USAT notes, in 2017, there were:

  • 2734 certified coaches
  • 4083 events sanctioned
  • 743 youth races sanctioned
  • 800 official clubs
  • 358 certified race directors
  • 229 active certified officials

USA Triathlon serves as the National Governing Body for triathlon, as well as duathlon, aquathlon, aquabike, winter triathlon, off-road triathlon and paratriathlon in the United States. Founded in 1982, USA Triathlon sanctions more than 4,000 races and connects with nearly 500,000 members each year, making it the largest multisport organization in the world. In addition to its work with athletes, coaches, and race directors on the grassroots level, USA Triathlon provides leadership and support to elite athletes competing at international events. These include International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championships, Pan American Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. USA Triathlon is a member of the ITU and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).
