Professional riders from the CCC Sprandi Polkowice UCI Professional Continental pro cycling team will be acting as pacemakers to support participants at the GFNY Gdynia gran fondo/sportive.
The first edition of GFNY Gdynia will take place on 27 May 2018. The agency SE Group is the organizer of GFNY Gdynia as exclusive licensee of the Gran Fondo NY brand for Poland. SE Group specializes in organizing mass participation sporting events. The agency is behind events such as Onico Gdynia Half Marathon, DOZ Marathon Lodz, Enea IRONMAN 5150 Warsaw and Enea IRONMAN 70.3 Gdynia.
Riders at GFNY Gdynia will have two distances to choose from – 80km and 136km. The start and finish of the competition will be located at Kosciuszko Square in Gdynia.
“Pacemakers, or people who set the pace, are a form of support for amateurs, initiated and disseminated in street runs,” said Michał Drelich. “Now we want to transfer this idea to a cycling race. The peloton in cycling has great power. Players consciously ride in a group, they support each other on the route, because it is definitely easier.”
“However, the leader always assumes the greatest burden of air resistance and controls the pace. Thanks to the cooperation with the professional CCC Sprandi Polkowice cycling team, the dictators of the pace will be the responsibility of extremely experienced players who know perfectly when they need to speed up and when they need to ease back. They will take on the burden of leading the groups for the appointed time.”
Together with Piotr Wadecki, Sports Director of CCC Sprandi Polkowice, the organizers of GFNY Gdynia have set pacemakers for groups traveling at an average speed of 20 km/h, 25 km/h and 30 km/h.
The organisers note that it is not possible for every kilometre on the route to travel at equal speed. The climbs will be slower, with accelerations on flat sections and descents.
“But the assumption is to get there in the group at the appointed time,” said Piotr Wadecki. “Our riders will not only dictate the pace; but also, if possible, give advice to the fans during the race. It will be easy to recognize [the team riders] because they will be the only ones in orange jerseys, while all others are taking part in green jerseys, as provided as part of the starter package by the race organizers.”
