The Roc d’Azur off-road and mountain bike festival in southeastern France celebrates its 35th edition this year, with the event taking place on 10-14 October. New this year, the Roc d’Azur organising team is offering up a new event: Gravel Origins 83.
Designed for gravel bike owners the new dedicated event will allow cyclists to ride 298km over two days ‘in the heart of the most beautiful scenery in the Var Department, in southern France’. The organisers add that ‘Gravel Origins 83 is not a race against the clock: the only thing that matters is having fun!’
- 298km course with 6,000m of elevation gain on 12-13 October.
- Registration opened on Tuesday May 15th on the event platform timeto.com.
- There will also be a one-day (76km) event: the Mavic Gravel Roc that will take place in the heart of the Maures mountain range.
Those riding the Gravel Origins 83 will cross the Esterel mountain range, explore the Verdon Gorge and take in the panoramic view of Lake Sainte-Croix. Designed for the ‘most adventurous riders’, the course, with 6,000m of elevation gain covers a route composed of 55% trails and 45% roads.
A release from Roc d’Azur organiser A.S.O, notes that the new gravel event ‘allows for reconnecting with the spirit of the gravel bike as it was developed in the United States: a category conducive to long distances, for which discovery and escape take precedence over competition.’ Thus, there will be no timed sections even if it will be mandatory to respect some waypoints… ‘At the end of the first stage, the participants will come together at the campsite to exchange their impressions and have a friendly meal before enjoying a well-deserved rest in the different types of accommodation that will be proposed.’
Fred Salomone, Roc d’Azur Sporting Director said “The Roc d’Azur has always been at the forefront of new trends and innovation. The gravel was added to the programme two years ago and we have found that there are two philosophies defining it between those who want to travel by bike and those who are more competition minded from road racing to cyclo-cross and mountain biking. With the Gravel Origins 83 we want them to discover the Var back country in a spirit of exploration and escape.”
