Thanyapura Health and Sports Resort in Phuket, Thailand, was the primary training ground for the Swedish Swimming Federation earlier this month, as the national team visited the facility from 3-18 January 2018.
A number of distinguished athletes were part of the visiting swim team, including:
- Michelle Coleman, a 2016 Olympic finalist, EC medallist & WC medallist, and current national record holder for the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke;
- Sophie Hansson, 2016 Olympic swimmer and EC medallist;
- Simon Sjodin, 2008 & 2016 Olympic swimmer and EC medallist;
- Erik Persson, 2016 Olympic swimmer and EC finalist;
- Sara Junevik, WC for Juniors medallist;
- Hanna Rosvall, EC for Juniors medallist:
- Björn Seeliger, EC for Juniors medallist; and
- Jannah Bronzell, EC for Juniors medallist.
The team was accompanied by Coach Carl Jenner, named Coach of the Year in 2016.
The team reportedly chose Thanyapura for a number of reasons. The trip marked the first time the Swedish National Swim Team had visited the resort, but they had been influenced by its facilities, the food, and the location. Team athletes have now starting to focus more of their training trips to locations within the Far East, in preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games due to take place in Tokyo, Japan. They will be looking to improve their training whilst acclimatising in more humid conditions.
Thanyapura’s unique mix of facilities – including a 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool, 500m running track, extensive fitness centre, integrated health & wellness centre and award-winning dining options, and its ideally located position within subtropical northern Phuket – makes it a highly sought after training facility for sportspeople around the world.
The resort added that athletes that are looking to continue their training during the winter months frequently return and stay at the sports resort, either to acclimatise and prepare for upcoming competitions, or simply keep their performance up during the low season.
Thanyapura Health & Sports Resort is located in a national park fifteen minutes away from Phuket International Airport. The resort team notes that it ‘presents a unique and inspiring destination for individuals, groups and families looking for a balanced approach to their lifestyle’. Athletes of all levels train and prepare for global sporting events in the state-of-the-art facilities offered at Thanyapura ‘whereas health conscious guests escape to rejuvenating health programs which edify the body and mind’.
Facilities include a 50m Olympic pool, a 25m pool, athletic track, modern 900sqm gyms, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, Muay Thai training ring and a FIFA standard football pitch. There is a dynamic 77-room Pool Wing, tranquil 37-room Garden Wing, award-winning restaurant, holistic wellness centre, an integrated health centre run by expert doctors and the renowned United World College Thailand International School.
