Berlin’s bicycle festival VELOBerlin will once again make the former city airport, Tempelhof Airport, a unique meeting place for all bicycle fans on April 27-28, 2019. Following its premiere in 2018, with 18,000 visitors and 500 brands, the organizers Velokonzept and Messe Friedrichshafen are launching an ‘even bigger and more diverse bicycle festival in the heart of Germany’s capital’.
VELOBerlin aims to make the most important trends and innovations in the bicycle industry accessible to everyone interested in cycling. The organisers note that ‘at VELOBerlin, exhibitors from Germany and all over the world will be presenting all the facets of the growing bicycle market – a worldwide trend that is particularly pertinent to the urban lifestyle in Berlin.’
The current models of the manufacturers exhibiting at the show can be tested on various test tracks and courses – ‘and if you like them, you can also purchase the bikes on the spot’. A varied program with experts, bike shows and hands-on activities will seek to tempt visitors to linger, exchange ideas, and be inspired.
Events on special topics provide information and networking opportunities for the industry, bicycle enthusiasts, and other visitors. Visitor competitions on racing bikes, fixed-gear bikes, and cargo bikes as well as BMX, bike trial, bike polo, cycleball and artistic cycling tournaments will aim to get people excited for cycling as a sport.
Big names and newcomers
Some of the world’s leading sport bike manufacturers such as Cannondale, Specialized, Simplon and the German brands Focus and Cube have confirmed their first participation in VELOBerlin in 2019.
With the development from a regional bicycle trade fair to a European bicycle festival, the exhibition will feature companies and brands such as BBF, Hartje with Victoria and Conway, Kalkhoff, Riese & Müller, the VSF bicycle manufacturer, as well as ABUS, SKS, SIGMA and VAUDE. In addition, high-end component manufacturers such as Rohloff, Pinion Drive Systems and SON Hub Dynamos and up-and-coming Berlin brands like Schindelhauer Bikes, 8bar bikes and HNF Nicolai will be present.
YoungStars – for the whole family
YoungStars is the name of the new area dedicated to young cyclists starting in 2019. Checking out options for transporting a youngest child, research on a child’s first very own bike, or finding a mountain or street bike to win a race with – in the YoungStars exhibition, children and parents can find out more about bicycles, accessories, and special offers and the exhibitors at YoungStars’ partner kinderfahrradfinder.de.
They can also try out the bikes on their own ‘test and action course’. The special focus area will be supplemented with shows, hands-on activities relating to riding technique, and safety training courses for more self-confidence in road traffic – which is also recommended for parents.
Since 2011, VELOBerlin has taken place annually as the largest urban event open to the public in the bicycle sector. After seven years at Messe Berlin, VELO moved to Tempelhof Airport in 2018 with a new festival concept.
On approximately 25,000 square metres of exhibition and test areas, 285 exhibitors with 500 brands (2018), the show is held in atmospheric hangars and in a covered outdoor area. Visitors are encouraged to look around and go on test rides at the various test and action courses, take in a varied stage and supporting program, watch cycle races, and go on cycle tours.
VELOBerlin is presented by Messe Friedrichshafen, which also runs the world’s leading trade fair Eurobike at Lake Constance, Germany. The bicycle festival is operated by Berlin agency Velokonzept, which also carries out other VELO events in Hamburg and Frankfurt.
VELOBerlin 2019 will take place from April 27-28, 2019, at Tempelhof Airport.
