Wahoo Fitness has been unveiled as the Official Points Jersey partner of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain. This announcement, which sees Wahoo’s relationship with Britain’s leading pro cycling race extended from its association as Official Training and Cycle Computer Partner, comes less than three weeks away from the 15th edition of the modern Tour (on 2-9 September).
Re-launched in 2004 after a five-year absence from the calendar, the OVO Energy Tour of Britain is British Cycling’s premier road cycling event. The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is the UK’s highest ranked professional stage race and the country’s largest free-to-watch sporting event, organised annually by SweetSpot Group.
Ranked at the 2.HC level by the UCI, the OVO Energy Tour of Britain attracts many of the world’s top cyclists, including Olympic and World Champions and Tour de France stage winners, to compete on British roads each September, with daily live coverage on ITV4 and Eurosport in the UK, and around the world.
The Wahoo Points Jersey has a prestigious roll of honour, with previous winners including Mark Cavendish (2006 and 2007), reigning Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas (2011), and Team Sky rider Michał Kwiatkowski (2014).
Wahoo’s latest sponsorship adds another layer to the company’s already impressive portfolio of cycling partnerships, which includes Team Sky, Team KATUSHA ALPECIN, BORA-hansgrohe and Canyon//SRAM Racing.
Commenting on the partnership, CEO and Founder of Wahoo Fitness, Chip Hawkins, said “We are thrilled to announce that Wahoo will be the Official Points Jersey partner of the 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain. As a company who understands the attention to detail required to win at the highest level, we’re proud to extend our support of professional road racing.
“Also acting as the race’s Official Training and Cycle Computer Partner, we look forward to providing fans with an insight into rider data from partner teams through TV and digital coverage.”
SweetSpot CEO Heath Harvey added “We are really excited to be working with Wahoo, whose innovation and commitment to performance have seen them quickly establish themselves as a key player within the cycling market. This year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain Points Jersey competition promises to be a thrilling battle and one which we’re confident won’t disappoint.”
Last year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain Points Jersey was won by Alexander Kristoff, ahead of Fernando Gaviria – both stage winners in the 2018 Tour de France – and a similarly thrilling battle is expected to be on the cards once the race begins in Carmarthenshire in southwest Wales.
The 2018 OVO Energy Tour of Britain features 20 teams, 13 of whom competed in this year’s Tour de France. Former stage winners Alex Dowsett and Marcel Kittel (Team KATUSHA ALPECIN) were the first world-class stars to be announced for this year’s race, with further announcements to be revealed ahead of publication of the race’s provisional start list on Friday 24th August.
For the second year running, each stage of the race will be shown live and in full on ITV4. Presenter Matt Barbet will be joined former pro rider Yanto Barker and Rebecca Charlton, with Marty MacDonald and Rob Hayles providing the commentary. Eurosport will also air daily live coverage.
