Water quality issues force cancellation of XTERRA Spain in Madrid

XTERRA has announced that the 2018 XTERRA Spain Championship off-road triathlon, scheduled to take place on September 15th in Madrid, has been cancelled due to water quality concerns.

“The water quality test we received last week reported elevated levels of bacteria that would pose a health risk to swimmers,” said event organizer, Roger Serrano. “The health and safety of participants is our utmost priority and as such, we simply could not open registration knowing the water may be un-swimmable in September.”

Serrano, who is also an elite triathlete and currently ranked third in the XTERRA European Tour standings after eight events, will continue to operate XTERRA events in Spain.

“We regret having to cancel XTERRA Spain in Madrid and apologize to our athletes and event partners,” said XTERRA European Director Nicolas Lebrun. “We support Roger in this decision and will work with him and his team to secure a world-class venue for the XTERRA Spain Championship race next year.”

Following the cancellation, the 16-race 2018 XTERRA European Tour will now conclude on September 9th at XTERRA Denmark.
