World’s biggest fundraising swim – Swimathon – hits landmark figure of £50m

Swimathon, the world’s biggest annual fundraising swim has announced today that it has reached the fundraising milestone of £50 million. In its 31-year history Swimathon has supported 36 different charities and has seen over 700,000 swimmers dive into more than 1,000 different pools across the UK, all raising money for charity.

Helping to reach the overall £50 million milestone, the 2018 event has raised £2 million – with more still coming in for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie as Swimathon’s official charity partners. The 2018 event has seen a 7% increase per head in fundraising, which seen as being testament to the strength of the event and the personal challenges that so many swimmers sign up to overcome.

Swimathon President and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew said “At such a significant time in Swimathon’s history it is important to take time to reflect. Remembering the communities we have supported, the charities that have made a difference to the people they support and the swimmers who have made life-long change to their health and wellbeing.”

He continued, “This year Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie have been our two charity partners. Swimathon really gives people a chance to get active with friends and family, whilst doing some good at the same time. I am so proud that Swimathon encourages people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the water.”

Swimathon’s top fundraiser, Darren Cainey, who was diagnosed with lung cancer four years ago, has raised a notable £5,100 for the two charities. When asked what his favourite moment of the challenge was, he responded: “Seeing my little boy holding up a sign with ‘Go Darren’ on it.” He completed his 5km swim at the London Aquatics Centre in just over 2 hours and said that “it has been an amazing experience and the support I’ve had has been overwhelming. I’m looking forward to coming back for next year’s Swimathon!”

Emma Hyatt, Head of Events at Cancer Research UK, said “It has been so great to see so many people taking part in Swimathon with over £2 million raised this year for us and Marie Curie as the official charity partners. In the past 31 years, Swimathon has raised £50 million for vital causes, which is a fantastic achievement. We look forward to building on this success as our partnership with Swimathon continues.”
