Next month, MTB athletes and enthusiasts will head to Italy’s Elba Island for the new edition of the Capoliveri Legend Cup. Taking place on 11 May 2019, the event is sponsored by Specialized and billed by the organising team as ‘the most scenic MTB competition in the world’.
Elba Island, which is set a few kilometres off the Tuscany coast, offers a unique combination of adventurous MTB trails surrounded by ‘wild nature that overlooks the crystal-clear sea and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago’.
Part of the UCI World Marathon Series, the Capoliveri Legend is now a fixture in the world of MTB and this year celebrates its tenth edition.
The peninsula of Capoliveri hosts visitors a 5-path bike park. Here, each year, the participants of the Capoliveri Legend Cup compete along the tracks of the original Grundig World Cup held on Elba Island in 1994. The route is located within sight of Mount Calamita, across the Capoliveri Bike Park with its varied terrain for mountain biking and sea views throughout.
Capoliveri Legend Cup brings MTB bikers from all over the world to experience a route that consists of 76 km with a descent of 2700m. The organising team point to two main highlights of the race: the ‘wall of legend’, a hard climb for the participating riders, and a main downhill section where riders can reach up to 70 km per hour.
Elba Island is also home to a number of multisport events. These include Elbaman, which takes place each September, as well as the the Iron Tour Cross and Kolossal off-road events.
