The organising team at Challenge Cancun in Mexico has confirmed that the event will be back in 2020 following an inaugural edition on April 28th, 2019. Next year’s middle distance race takes place on April 26, 2020 – with a Challenge Open Water event on April 27th. Registration is now open on the event website.
Challenge Cancun is an official qualifying event for Challenge Family’s The Championship, which will be held in 2020 in Samorin, Slovakia.
The event is sanctioned by the Mexican Triathlon Federation and is supported by the Tourism Bureau of Quintana Roo and The Hotel Association. It also has the authorisation of the Municipal Office in the region.
Challenge Cancun is a licensed event of the international Challenge Family series, with over 40 events worldwide and ‘hosting more than 70,000 competitors in iconic destinations’. These include Roth in Germany, Samorin in Slovakia, Madrid, Cape Town and events in New Zealand, the USA, and Brazil.

The turquoise waters of Playa Langosta in the Caribbean Sea are home to the 1.9 km swim. Athletes leaving the lagoon will enter T1, situated in Cancun’s symbolic square. They then embark on the ‘spectacular bike leg’. The race culminates with a 3-loop run in downtown Cancun, where ‘spectators have the best seat in the house to cheer on the athletes as they go by.’
