The Isles of Scilly in South West England will host its fourth ÖTILLÖ Swimrun weekend and the third stop of the 2019 ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series. Close to 120 teams from 20 nations will take to the start for Sunday’s World Series race on June 9th.
Some of the best teams in the world will chase the coveted ‘Golden Bib’ and take on the challenge of winning six ÖTILLÖ races in a row and the prize purse of €33,000 per event category. Others are on-site to try to get one of the eight qualification spots to the ‘holy grail of Swimrun’, the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship.
On Saturday, June 8th, ÖTILLÖ will host several shorter races. The aim is to make the sport accessible to more people and to let newcomers experience swimrun.
The Experience distance is 7.8 km with three swim sections totalling 950m. This race distance can either be undertaken in teams of two, or solo.
The Sprint eludes to the distance and not to the speed. It is a total of 15.6 km with eight swim sections totalling 3085m. This race distance can either be done in teams of two or solo.
Sunday’s ÖTILLÖ World Series race features 120 teams of two. Athletes will have their powers of endurance tested over the ten trail runs and eight swim sections across the islands of St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s and Bryher.
In total, they will cover 29km on foot and 8.3km in open water. Two of the swim sections are longer than 2,000 metres in the open Atlantic Ocean.
Depending on conditions, these stretches could be very rough. The water is around 14ºC and the swims will be a difficult challenge even for the fittest. The fastest teams are expected to complete the course in around five hours.
David Jackson, Executive Director of Islands’ Partnership, said “We’re delighted to be hosting the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship UK Qualifier for the fourth year. The event is a welcome addition to Scilly’s adventure sports calendar that takes advantage of the islands’ rugged terrain and pristine waters. Best of luck to everyone taking part!”
