La Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, a seven-stage UCI World Tour race, runs through Catalunya and finishes in the streets of Barcelona. As ‘the third oldest cycling event in the world’, this year, cyclists around the world will have the chance to race the event’s stages in virtual form with indoor cycling software Bkool.
Virtual races will be hosted online on Bkool’s simulator in 3D form from 6-21 March 2019, ending a few days before the start of the main event itself. This collaboration will allow sports and cycling fans to race the 99th edition of the Volta from the comfort of their own home before watching pros Chris Froome, Alejandro Valverde and Romain Bardet battle it out on the real streets of Catalunya.
Bkool’s Marketing and Sales Director, Javier Cedepano, said “This partnership sees the race – whose establishment in 1911 makes it the third oldest cycling event in the world after the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia – begin to incorporate our technology, that is set to shake up the cycling world.”
He continued, “With over 100,000 users and 2 million real routes, Bkool is very much at the forefront of this indoor cycling revolution, and it is the technical expertise of the Bkool simulator that will bring the drama to people’s homes. Our exclusive technology perfectly recreates the road and riding conditions and the effect they have on the rider, including the weather, the time of day and the orography of the route, thus granting the virtual event real authenticity.”
Bkool’s involvement in this year’s edition, which will offer it status as one of the Official Suppliers of the Volta, will seek to encourage and improve the user experience, as well as both capturing and influencing the hype of event week.
Cyclists registered on the Bkool simulator will be able to compete against other riders online in the first six (simulated) stages of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, taking place between 6-21 March. After downloading the Bkool simulator, users must simply connect their bike trainers to the software to be able to compete in the virtual event for free.
Prizes will also be available for those competing in an online competition, adding yet another twist to the event. The first three home in each category in virtual racing will win a Bkool Smart Air trainer. Leading riders will qualify to attend the final day of the Volta in Barcelona, and to compete in a challenge at a Bkool stand in the event finish area.
