ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series rounds out 2019 with new Malta event

The ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series will end the season and host 2019 finals on the island nation of Malta on November 23-24, 2019.

Golden Sands in Mellieha will be the arena for Sprint and Experience races on Saturday November 23, together with the finish line for the ÖTILLÖ World Series event on Sunday, November 24.

The organising team note that ‘This is a perfect Swimrun location with trails, bays and some small hills. The water is exceptionally clear. The Radisson Blu hotel in Golden Sands will host the race HQ and all official functions.’

Malta is easy to get to throughout Europe, with direct flights from all major European hubs. On Malta everything is within one hour’s drive.

“Through our [local] partnership we have discovered Malta and its fantastic nature,” said Mats Skott, Race Director ÖTILLÖ and swimrun co-founder. “We cannot wait to show our community how beautiful it is to swimrun here!”

Situated in the Southern Mediterranean, Malta offers up clear water around its rugged coastline. It is the southernmost country in Europe, and has been a central part of Mediterranean history throughout the ages with extensive cultural and historical remains.

Malta has been inhabited since approximately 5900 BC. Its location in the centre of the Mediterranean has historically given it strategic importance as a naval base. The Phoenicians and Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Aragonese, Knights of St John, French and British have influenced the country’s ancient culture over the centuries. The capital, Valetta, features ramparts and antique buildings.

Race weekend
Registration for the races will open on July 2, 2019. Racers in all three distances – Experience (5.4km and 3 swims), Sprint (14.4km and 5 swims) and World Series (39km and 13 swims) – will experience the clear water and the rugged terrain of the country. The Saturday Experience and Sprint will be held around the area of Golden Sands. The Sunday World Series Final will start in Valletta and finish in Golden Sands Bay.

The average air temperature at the end of November is around 18°C, and the water is around 20°C.
