The International Triathlon Portocolom in Mallorca, Spain, has been added as the first event to the recently launched European Long Distance Triathlon Series. As a result, Triathlon Portocolom has today announced a long-term partnership with Spirit Multisport.
The Mallorca-based event, which takes place on 14 April 2019, has committed to be part of the new European Long Distance Triathlon Series. The new series has been co-founded by triathlon Olympic Gold and Silver medallist, Nicola Spirig, and is headed up by Tom Sutton as CEO. It consists of ‘iconic triathlon events across four countries’.
The unique series, billed as the ‘world’s toughest long distance tri series’ will feature Portocolom as its official kick-off event with over one thousand triathletes racing innovative 55.5 and 111 (1km swim, 100 km bike and 10 km run) formats.
“It’s a great opportunity for this legendary triathlon to become part of an international series, bringing opportunities to deliver additional benefits to our athletes and to keep growing the quality of the race,” said David Thompson, race organizer of International Triathlon Portocolom.
“Each year the event is awarded officially by athletes as the ‘Best Triathlon event in the Balearic Islands’. It’s been a high quality event for the age groupers, and now becomes a top class event for professionals with a significantly enlarged pro prize purse.”
The event swim will take place in Portocolom harbour. The bike loop then takes athletes across a rolling course, including the ascent of Sant Salvador, with its 494m height and views towards the island and the southeast coast. The run takes athletes from the old town along the crystal beaches of Portocolom Bay before they cross the finish line.
Spirit Multisport CEO, Tom Sutton, said “We could not be happier partnering with Triathlon Portocolom as the first event of the series. Our priority is to work with high quality, athlete focused events, which Triathlon Portocolom has been delivering for the past 21 years.
“The distance is also perfect for a season opener, providing a genuine, tough hit-out to our pro and age group athletes, but over a shortened run distance that won’t compromise your summer season.”
Spirit and event organiser Kumulus, will hold an official press conference at the International Portocolom Triathlon event in April, and will be releasing details on sponsorship and partnership initiatives over the coming months.
The Triathlon Portocolom International is organized by the sports events agency Kumulus and the Club Triatló Portocolom; and supported by the local council of Felanitx, the Ayuntamiento de Felanitx.
