South Korea is the newest addition on the Challenge Family world map. Located in the centre of an island district, the tradition-rich coastal city of Gunsan will host Challenge Gunsan-Saemangeum on 30th June 2019.

The middle-distance race will provide athletes with a scenic bike and run course along the world’s longest 33.9km-long Saemangeum seawall. This connects the island district ‘star above the lake’ with the mainland.

“Challenge Gunsan-Saemangeum´s beautiful coastline, natural heritage sites and the locals’ hospitality will bring a wonderful experience to athletes from all over the world,” said Minseung Kim, Challenge Gunsan-Saemangeum’s Race Director.

Participating athletes will benefit from a ‘spectacular and safe swim course’ in the Yellow Sea. There are ‘wide and smooth roads while they ride through a scenic setting of 63 inhabited and uninhabited islands.’

For Challenge Family CEO Zibi Szlufcik, the new event is seen as a great opportunity to add this scenic race to the Challenge Family race portfolio. He said, “We are proud to see South Korea coming back with the amazing destination of Challenge Gunsan-Saemangeum to the global schedule of Challenge Family.

“The event will be great contribution to the development of triathlon in Asia; and we are looking forward to delivering it in cooperation with our local partners and the federation. The race will provide a large number of qualification slots for The Championship and significant prize money for professional athletes as a part of the Challenge Family World Bonus.”

He added, “There is no doubt, with the support of the local government and tourism board this race will grow to a ‘must do’ destination in Asia.”

Based in Amberg, Germany, Challenge Family is a leading International triathlon festival race series. With over 40 races annually across 26 host countries, Challenge Family claims to be the fastest growing mass endurance triathlon brand in the world. Challenge Family aims to offer ‘events for everyone’ with a festival feel… ‘so that everyone can share in the triathlon experience, from professionals to age-groupers.’
