The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has announced that Japanese athlete Ai Ueda, a member of the Athlete’s Committee, has been appointed member of the Executive Board as the second representative of the Athletes collective.
With this decision, ITU notes that it ‘demonstrates its support for increasing the female presence in the governing body of the organization, along with giving athletes more voice and voting rights when it comes to approving decisions.’
Following the decision taken by the Executive Board in 2019 of adding a second representative of the Athletes Committee in the Executive Board, Ueda was selected by her fellow Committee members as the new Board representative. She started her Board duties in January 2020.
Ueda is an active elite athlete, as is the other athlete representative in the Executive Board, Tamas Toth. Ueda will combine her presence in the Executive Board with her training and racing, while she is trying to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
